Question C82 Lotus guide flag
#1

Anyone know where I can get a replacement steering arm/guide flag for a Scalextric C82 Lotus please?

Any other replacement parts for these available? Screen? Gearbox/exhaust?

Thanks for any help offered.

Hello Top Down,

Gearbox and exhaust unit is available from site below.  Search for C82.

Well spotted. Thanks for that - but unfortunately it says 'sold out'. No big deal on that. One exhaust pipe is broken but I can make a reasonable replacement from plastic rod or wire I suppose.

More important is the steering arm/guide flag.

If you just want it to look pretty...  I fitted two metal ferrules (large versions of the things that we use to hold the braid-wires in place).
I drilled holes for twin and earth type copper wire then glued them in and then the ferrules over the wire.
If you want, I will send you a couple of the ferrules.

The carburettor intakes are part of the screen aren't they? So special to the C82.
I gave up trying to get reliable running so I cut the pin off the guide/axle...

That looks great! Love what you've done with it so yes please to a couple of those ferrules.

The one I have is complete and original other than one broken exhaust pipe, a cracked screen (which actually is such a clean break it isn't noticable) and there's something missing from the steering arm/guide.

It operates the steering as it should and holds the braids - but nothing reaches into the slot. I don't know whether the bottom of the flag has worn away/broken off, or whether there were one or two rods which came down from it to engage in the slot and they have worn away or broken.

It runs strongly on a PP9 battery but I won't know whether that will translate into decent performance on the track until I can fix the guide.

What wheels and tyres did you use - and would it still run with those if I did something similar?

I think there are two types of guide. One has a peg (approx 2mm) at the front end of the "tiller". Other has a small blade at the front and a sperate one a few mm back.
Will PM a couple of photos from the most recent collectors guide.

For the car above, I replaced the front axle with a standard metal one simply glued in place. So fixing the new wheels was no challenge. They are the five-spoke star type wheels from the 90's Scalextric cars. Replacing the front wheels on the standard axle unit would be fiddly and at the end of the day, these guide units were always too floppy for serious use.

The gears become brittle with age so its good that yours work - also that the motor brushes are working. The magnet is probably past its best though.
Too much rear grip might worry the gears...

'Mine' has a very short 'keel' between the braids, about 1/4" long and maybe 3/16ths deep, at the front of which appears to be the stub of that pin you're talking about. It's so short that on a flat surface all four wheels touch the ground and rotate if it's pushed along.

Sounds like I need a steady hand to drill down that stub - no, on second thoughts I might shorten the keel from the front by the dia. of that stub then drill and insert a plastic coated metal rod I have which, if I can find it, should be just about the perfect size  Thumbup

Since this was left on my doorstep 'gratis' in a boxful of old Scalextric track it owes me nothing - but I feel I owe IT a chance to run under its own power again  Ambulance

I can see how the rear end of the body separates but how does the front of the undertray unclip so I can fix the steering please, or should I just pop the steering out? I don't want to force anything and break it.

As for the motor magnet, I might try reviving it by attaching a neodyium dot to it, somewhere it can't be seen  Bigsmile

Perhaps the front tyres are too large?
I am away from home for the weekend now so can't measure one of my standard cars
The lower body section just pulls off - best to lever it gently with a thin blade.

Yes the steering unit just pops out, again, lever it gently.

Now you have the C82, you will want  a C81, so have sent 4 ferrules.  I started with the C81 and then another and then a C82, and then ...  ... well , they are nice.

Mm? They LOOK original - but maybe they aren't?

Picked up three steering units in one pack of spares at Gaydon, so should see this usable before too long.

Runs fine on a 9v battery but doesn't seem happy on a power supply. Odd?
