Quick gear failure
#1

Hi!

The boy and I unboxed a new scalextric set (police chase) and a couple of new cars. After adjusting the contact on one controller (thanks for the tip!) we really got it rolling. The Ferarri 412 is awesome!

A brand new Mini Cooper made a few laps and then started groaning a bit. I took the top off and discovered the crown gear is all chewed up.

1) Is this normal? I have to think "no"
2) How easy it is to replace?
3) How do I know what size, ratio, etc when shopping for replacements?

It is not supposed to be normal to have a gear set fail so soon but it sounds like you got a badly assembled one.
Please post some pictures of the  car and the gears.
One way or another, gears can be found that will fit.

Exchange under warranty? Contact Scalextric?

I agree. There is no way this should happen with a new car and it does sound like it wasn't assembled properly in the factory. Assuming that you are in the UK you should contact the dealer that sold you the car.

Under consumer law you have a contract with the seller and it is up to them to sort out the problem for you.

If the seller either can't or won't help contact Scalextric through their website. Their customer service is usually very good so you should be able to get it sorted one way or another.
If this fails you still have the option of contacting your local trading standards office or buying a complete rear axle assembly which should just clip into the car but having bought a new car you shouldn't have to pay for another axle assembly after such a short time.

If you do need to repair the car yourself the following link will help you find the service sheet which will have an exploded view of all the parts for the car and their Scalextric part nos

It is the C4154 Mini Cooper from 2019. I purchased it from a hobby store via eBay so I'll hit them up. Thanks!

Hi Scott,

The Scalex Mini is tall in height, short in length, and narrow compared to the Ferrari. It is prone to de-slotting much more often. It's also harder to notice if one rear axle bushing pops half way out because of a de-slot. You barely see the car sitting low on one rear corner. By the time you stop racing the car to figure out what happened. The crown gear may already be damaged.

New cars can also come out of the box with one bushing not fully popped in place. That too is a formula for disaster within a few laps, unless noticed before hand.

Either way. A new car has a warranty.

Best of luck with your Mini!  Thumbup
