Power Supply Protection
#1

One of the outcomes of my recent adventures with learning how to wire up my controller and track in a 'positive wiring/common ground' configuration was that I burnt out two Fusion 101 power supplies. These good, but basic, PS to not have any accessible fused protection so once I caused 'the whistle of death' from each one, they became unusable.

Is there a way of introducing an inline fuse into the wiring circuit to provide accessible protection to the Power Supply? Anybody doing this, and do you have a preferred product?

It is an 8A, 13.8v, unit, so as I only run one RTR type car at a time on my track, I was thinking maybe a 5A fuse?

This is the wiring circuit: -

Any advice welcome...

Thank you

I always put a 5A quick blow fuse between the +ve power terminal and the controller.

Here's a holder and quick blow fuse ready to go into a driver station I'm building...

There are plenty of places to buy electronic components, but I do like bitsbox.

Hello Jeremy,
The easiest place to locate the fuse will be at the output of the power supply, in-line with the positive terminal. You can buy pre-wired fuse holders on Ebay.

And less than 24hrs after ordering, a pack of bits from bitsbox was delivered by our friendly postie.

I might just add the banana plugs and sockets to the inline fuses still to arrive from eBay.

Any idea how I connect this wire to this banana plug?

If there's no screw/bolt to screw down and trap the wire, then solder it. Flux and tin the cavity on the plug - you'll need a hot iron and plenty of solder - tin the wire and then solder together.

I prefer to solder banana plugs Thumbup
