2023 3DP Vintage LeMans Proxy
#1

Announcing the next 3DP Proxy......

2023 3DP Vintage LeMans Proxy Rules

General Rules
The following rules are designed to ensure a competitive field of 3DP printed model race cars. The point is to encourage the use of home printers to build functional slot cars.

Proxy race organizer decisions are final in the interpretation and application of these rules.

Eligible cars are those that ran at LeMans from 1950 – 1963. Refer to racingsportscars.com or other reference material showing your car ran at LeMans. If it didn’t run at LeMans or the LeMans test day, it won’t be eligible. This excludes cars that were entered but never showed up (Chaparral 2A, for example) unless a special dispensation is provided by the organizer. Requests for dispensation are to be posted in the Rules thread in this forum.

In the interest of providing a varied field of cars, the Corvette is excluded as it is much wider and would have an unfair advantage compared to the other scale cars.

Participation is limited to 20 cars, one car per entrant. Organizer reserves the right to allow multiple entries to fill the field if enough builds are not completed.

Cost will be $30 USD. Entrants will be confirmed when payment is received.

Cars will be due to the first track (Timberline Trace) in MN by September 1, 2023.

I. Body
1) Bodies must be 3D printed using a home printer (no sending the file to Shapeways or other commercial printing services). Both resin and FDM printing technology is acceptable.
Failure to comply will result in disqualification and the car will be returned to the owner.

2) Bodies must be within 2mm of scale (no 60mm wide Ferrari 166 / C Jags, etc) and be proportional. Dimensions are all over the internet (Ultimatecarpage is one source, there are others). It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure compliance with this requirement. If in doubt, set your slicer a little smaller to make sure you comply. The organizer will not be providing a list of specifications for bodies. Cars that are non compliant will be returned to their owners.

3) Bodies must fully cover the tires (tires must be fully under the fenders). No tire may project beyond body work, as viewed from above, at maximum side travel of wheels. Body width modifications such as flares over tires are not permitted unless documented by photographic evidence from in-period (no as-restored changes).
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race if the issue cannot be fixed

4) Bodies must be removable to allow inspection and photography prior to the first race and to allow maintenance and repair during the race series.
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race if the issue cannot be fixed.

5) 3DP Driver figure is required, with representation of at least head, shoulders and arms. Must be vintage appearance, no full face helmets etc. No vac form or paper interiors / drivers are permitted. No mechanical parts to be seen through cockpit.
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race.

6) Windscreen is required unless photo evidence shows the car started without any windscreen. If the model includes head lights they must be covered with clear lenses as appropriate. Vacuform windscreen and lenses are acceptable. Working lights are not required.
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race.

7) Any paint, decals and markings may be used. Three racing numbers in meatballs are required (nose and both sides). Both “fantasy liveries” and accurate reproductions / homages of real cars are encouraged. Additional detail encouraged, 3DP where possible (mirrors, pipes, etc.

8) Body Mounts- No pins THROUGH the body, Velcro, magnets, etc. will be allowed. Screws through the chassis to body mounting points or chassis with side mounts such as the HRS/HSR-2 can be used as long as the pins do NOT go through the body. Cars non compliant will be returned to their owners.

9) Entrant’s name must be written on underside of chassis in paint, silver Sharpie, included in the chassis print, or engraved. Body screw adjustment information on car underside is encouraged.

10) The car must be pre-registered and race number obtained prior to tech inspection. Duplicate race numbers will not be permitted.

II. Chassis
1) Chassis layout may be IL / AW. No commercial chassis. Full 3DP preferred, but hybrid with 3DP pod is acceptable. Commercial pods are acceptable when used in a hybrid / 3DP chassis. Carbon fiber is not permitted.
Cars non compliant will be returned to their owners or entrants may provide required replacement parts at their own expense, time and cost.

2) Gearing is open but must provide adequate clearance to avoid touching rails on plastic track.

3) Width from outer tire shoulder to outer tire shoulder for front and rear axles may not exceed body width. No portion of the tires / wheels may be visible when viewed from above with the body mounted on the chassis. An exception may be allowed for spinners on wheels/inserts at organizer’s discretion.
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race if the issue cannot be fixed

4) Underside of car chassis and body must clear track road surface (not rails), on level track, by 1.5 mm minimum prior to the running of the first race. No lead on the underside of the chassis. Gears may be lower, but cars may be excluded from racing if gears contact the track or rails, and track owner judges them a hazard to track or rails.
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race if the issue cannot be fixed.

5) Guide must be entirely under body, and not visible when viewed from above. 3DP guides are encouraged but not required.
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race if the issue cannot be fixed
Recommendations:
As a general rule the guide should go through Ninco and Scalextric R1 turns.
Problem guides:
-Slot.it wood SICH07 even if depth trimmed, too long does not go through Ninco R1 corners.
-Scaleauto SC-1601-1602-1603
And any other of similar dimensions.
Guidelines
Max depth measured under braids: 5,8 mm
Max length : 22 mm
Max thickness of the blade : 1,9 mm
-5% of distance covered in the first race if the issue can be fixed before the series start,
BUT if a car cannot go through the corner it will be considered as DNS and will be awarded 0 points for that race.

6) No traction magnets are permitted.
Cars that are non compliant will be returned to their owners

III. Tires and Wheels
1) Rear tires must be silicone. Rear tires may be slip-on or glued. Entrants with cars non compliant may provide required replacement parts at their own expense (time and cost).
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race if the issue cannot be fixed

2) The front and rear wheels may be plastic or aluminum (plastic fronts / aluminum rears is acceptable). 3DP wheels are encouraged but not required.

3) Wheels and tires should look appropriate (no 13mm fronts, for example) and fill the wheel wells.

4) Front tires can be from any manufacturer. Clear finish may be applied to front tire tread area. No o-ring or heavily profiled front tires.

5) Wheels can be from any manufacturer. Realistic inserts are required to be applied to insert wheels, unless wheels are 3D printed in at least a semi-realistic manner. Blank aluminium discs, three-slot discs, drilled wheels, etc must be covered with a period compatible insert. Inserts are not required if the car is running wire wheels. Entrants with cars non compliant may provide required replacement parts at their own expense time and cost.
Failure to comply will incur a penalty of 5% of distance covered in each race if the issue cannot be fixed

IV. Motors
1) Motors are limited to 18k RPM Predator motors. FK, FC, FF motor types are acceptable.
2) Motors must be stock, as manufactured, but may be run-in prior to this race series. No changes or modifications to motor are permitted aside from removal of capacitors, chokes, or resistors external to the motor.
3) No capacitors or other electrical devices may be fitted to motor circuit, except for as-manufactured suppressor and lighting devices.
4) Motors drawing excessive current, which results in slowing other cars on the track, or tripping of overload protectors in track circuit, will be regarded as faulty and disqualified from racing on that track.
5) No neodymium magnet motors.
Cars non compliant will be returned to their owners.
