Cleaning off glue residue
#1

Acquired this well used Scalextric car for a project, but it has glue residue where the rear wing was repaired...

How can I get this off without stripping the original paint/decal away?

I'm supposing lighter fuel, but would welcome advice.

Thanks in anticipation.

I had a similar issue with somebody else's over exuberant use of styrene cement and - no guarantee it will work for you but - I spotted advice to stick the body in the freezer then have a go at it.

It certainly helped me with shaving it away using the sharp edge of a new craft knife blade BUT I wasn't trying to preserve original paint. I wanted to get back to  the bare plastic anyway. It WAS a case of of being very patient and careful though, as I didn't want to damage the surface of the plastic itself.

Good luck, however you choose to do it  Thumbup

The only way I have done this is by using a fine polishing compound on a round polishing disc in a dremel at very very low speeds.  Takes time but I have managed to clear glue from 'screens this way

Keeping the old paint and decal is not easy when removing glue.

Install a nicer wing to hide the old glue?  Bigsmile

Jeremy, It looks like the glue has already eaten into the red stripe,......a sense a repaint coming up !!.............as far as removing it successfully.........good luck !!

As Anthony mentioned, you can repair glass that has glue marks, but you must sand/compound down below the level that the glue has eaten into the glass, then re polish.

From the discoloring on the back window I'll guess the glue used was cyanoacrylate, aka super glue. If that's the case then buy some of this debonder. It's probably the best shot at removing it without removing the plastic body. If it's not CA then perhaps boiling some water and placing the rear end of the body in the water for a couple minutes, and see if it comes loose, or can be picked away. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes!

Thanks all.

If I get a quiet moment at my desk today, I will investigate the markings in more detail.

I think some of them are left over attachment rather than glue or dissolved bodywork.
