Nürburgring
The original Nürburgring track was built in the 1920s around the village and medieval castle of Nürburg in the Eifel mountains. The "Green Hell" as it was nicknamed by Jackie Stewart, was a 20.8 km long circuit with an elevation change of over 300 metres.
However, in spite of the old track's fame and notoriety, it was no longer considered as a suitable, or safe venue for major international racing events.
That honour now goes to the much shorter GP Strecke (Grand Prix course), situated at the southern end of the famous old Nordschleife and opened in 1984. The track has since hosted a number of Formula 1 races, and has regularly held the 1000km Nürburgring.
