Ahvenisto

Ahvenisto

Ahvenisto is something of a hidden gem nestling in the Finnish forests, but the figure of eight circuit is little known around the rest of the world.

Completed in July 1967, it was only the second purpose built race track in Finland. In September of that year, in only the second event to be held at the venue, a Formula 2 race attracted such famous drivers as Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jack Brabham, and Jochen Rindt.

The circuit was also the site of an unusual stage of the 1,000 Lakes Rally in 1968, when the cars lined up five abreast and set off around the track at three second intervals.

The track has since held a range of events, including motorcycle road racing, rallycross, and touring cars. A record crowd of over 40,000 watched the Race of Stars in 1985, when a mixed group of famous drivers including Nelson Piquet, Keke Rosberg, Timo Salonen and Michele Mouton raced near stock BMWs.
