Masking tape - Graham - 17th-Sep-23

What is the best way to remove masking tape adhesive which has transferred onto a painted model surface ?

Try lighter fluid

Sounds like a start again situation to me.
Lighter fluid/ fuelite/ shellite might work if there is a light (?) amount of goo remaining but vigorous rubbing usually sees paint loss.

IPA (IsoPropyl Alcohol)
Eucalyptus Oil, you will need to use some sort of oil remover such as shellite, IPA but eucalyptus oil is used world over to remove all sorts of stickers.

Be careful with these products as too much polishing, scrubbing may tarnish the surface or even damage the surface.

Post a photo of the offending problem Graham, it may make problem solving easier.

The lighter fuel seemed to work, others had mentioned using waxes or T-Cut etc, but I want to use a clear over lacquer and was worried that using a wax or oil would cause me other issues afterwards. The main problem had been where the masking tape edges had left a slight ridge of adhesive, the lighter fuel has removed this but also some of the paint under the line where the edge of the tape had been. So I will need to respray this area again, but it is relatively a small area, so I think I can re do this without having to rework the whole moulding.

A citrus oil based glue remover followed by soap and water to remove the oil may be a bit easier on the paint than lighter fluid.

Going forward, I would recommend Tamiya model masking tape as it leaves a crisp line and no residue from my experience.

We have a tin of servisol sticky label remover at work, citrus based, it would probably work great.

This product is designed to remove adhesive residue. It is also citrus based.
