I enjoyed the videos and look forward to the live streams.
...especially enjoying the fact these are basically standard cars tuned to go well.

And finally, footage from Class D:
That about wraps it up from me. Thank you to all of the entrants for letting me play with you cars. There are some fantastic cars in there and running this round was great fun; I think a few other club members have been convinced by proxy racing following this!
Onward to the Brighton Hill Climb!

The hill has been built - and runs nicely. There’s lots of finishing touches, plus a proper shakedown to follow this afternoon.

Here's more of an introduction to the hillclimb...
[attachment=22709]
The starts reverts to the top of the hill - at the Devil's Dyke pub - three feet above floor level. There's a grandstand and spectators this year too...
[attachment=22710]
Timing is via an IR sensor, Arduino Uno and Race Coordinator. The software is set up for 90 seconds of warm-up, followed by a five 'lap' timed run.
[attachment=22711]
After negotiating the usual ninety-degree inner left-hander off the line, there's a shallower-than-usual dip into the SCX 'Super-Sliding Curve Set'...
[attachment=22712]
This is set up as an S-bend and will punish any cars with poor mechanical grip - as there is zero magnetic attraction from the rails. As before, the first precipitous drop is after the muddy esses...
[attachment=22713]
You should know the drill by now... The crest will be a problem for cars that are too low for their length - they will bottom-out and deslot. The sudden changes in gradient also accentuate the shallow 6mm slot depth of SCX and Scalextric Classic track - especially as the slot is not enclosed. Guides often catch if they don't have a notch to deflect over bumpy bits in the bottom of the slot. Although an issue going down, the crests will be more of a problem going up (see later).
Once over this crest, it's a constant gradient down to a new section...
[attachment=22714]
Instead of a ninety-degree standard radius left, this turn now features a complex of inner, standard and outer curve pieces. The changes improve the descent and ascent for the cars I run on the hill - although we'll see how the Road Race cars manage! And there are more changes...
[attachment=22715]
Although the SCX powerbase and 45 ohm Parma controller are the same as before, some of the gradient lost at the top is transferred to the straight that dips down to ground level - the figure-of-eight loopback now includes a couple of straights, a crossover, an outer corner and then into a short straight and a tighter Ninco return loop - you can see that all in the previous post. This alternative layout loses the long 12-foot 'Saddlescombe Road' - making the entire course shorter and more technical. The lap time remains similar - around 17 seconds for the Scalextric Mégane.
One the way back up, the tighter corners means it's less 'seat-of-your-pants' and more precision is needed... But when it all goes wrong, there's less speed involved.
And now for the section where I suspect a few cars will struggle, as they always do...
[attachment=22716]
It doesn't look much, but if the car bottoms out, the guide will lift and the car will not turn through the corner going into the chicane piece - or will deslot on the chicane entry. I will be standing close by... But hopefully I won't be needed and the cars will get back up the hill, through the inner right-hander and back into the Ninco return loop...

The rest of today is giving the Road Race cars a shakedown, ready for an 8am start Sunday morning for the first two classes, followed at 9.45-ish by classes C & D. Keep your fingers crossed that I've ironed out the glitches in the OBS live stream - but no promises!
Last year, the quickest Road Race cars on the hill were two Ford GT40s (an NSR and a Slot.it), split by an SRC Porsche 914/6. The SRC Porsches always go well - light, short, powerful - so that's my tip for tomorrow.

Shakedown threw up a number of serious guide issues. And after discussion with Graham, we have decided the following cars will not start the stage tomorrow:
- Team Cube (Class A)
- Courtney Sport (Class A and Class D)
- Team Tatters (Class A and Class C)
- ALS Racing (Class B and Class C)
- Brumos RSR (Class C)
Seven of the eight cars had guides that were catching in the bottom of the slot, even on the flat. All got stuck solid at the start of the climb. Brumos RSR's Class C car had too fat a guide and the car became stuck solid in most corners.
Graham made clear at the start of the event that it was likely that cars which had "out of spec" guides might not be able to complete all the stages. Cars fitted with the NSR guide Graham recommended were all perfectly smooth on the hillclimb. We decided that not starting the eight cars was fair to those entrants who had prepared their cars to the guidelines.
Of the other 24 cars, most sailed through the shakedown. RNLI and Roker Roar's Class D cars required quick fixes (a wire reattached and body screws loosened) to get them going. A couple will be a challenge to drive on the hill - and I will write comments for all the cars on the results sheets tomorrow.

The five Modern Canonball Class A cars starting at 8-ish...

And the seven Pan American Classics Class B cars…

Edit: change of plan on the streaming. Although it seemed to be working, Race Coordinator was struggling. I'd prefer to be confident of the timing than stream live. I will be taking some video and will edit that later. My other plan B (a live stream of just video via a Chromebook) was scuppered by Google insisting on a 24-hour set-up period!

I really enjoyed this class. The lighter cars mostly skipped up the hill, although Roadrunners’ Corvette was a little too low and bottomed out over the crests. The big cars were great fun - the descents were definitely more nerve-wracking than the climb. And the Scott Sports Escort with no rear grip was brilliant trying to get the power down on the ascent!
