Much of this is common, but small-scale wood-crafting... Drilling and using a small chisel works fine for hollowing out any sort of wood!
I must point out again that I am not using soft balsa, I use the harder lime tree/basswood.
I've used the Makita belt sander seen in some pics in the Lotus thread( a better variation of the more common Black&Decker Powerfile) to hollow this shell out. Any of those machines would be overkill for balsa work, I think.
You get by with very simple tools!
Why don't you just get some pieces of good wood, start working and see what happens!
I am sure you have looked around and found Gordon Steadman's (the balsa boy) ”Building a slot car body out of wood” thread on this forum?
His ”I'm into bodies” should be interesting for you as well.
There is a lot to pick up from older threads.
Kind regards
Carver
I didn't think it was balsa.
I certainly will give it a go and I'm still trawling through loads of posts on here so look forward to finding more of Gordons work.

As expected, this turned out more difficult than expected...
While working, I have been thinking this would suit the 3D guys better than my medieval methods.
The Goggo has gone through many phases, here are some of them
I have created the side screen frames from brass and styrene strips.
[attachment=21572]
[attachment=21573]
Trying to find the subtle forms of the panels...
[attachment=21574]
Here we are today! Still a very rough model, still lots to do.

[attachment=21578][attachment=21580]
I am trying to capture the overall shape before going into details.
I would appreciate any kind of constructive criticism! There is yet time to make changes. Sometimes I listen to advise...
I will now put it away for some time and later return with fresh eyes.
Once the rough form is settled I will do the detailing, chrome trim on top of the wings, along the roof edge, and below the side screens.
And bumpers, of course, and more...

The only critic I have is it doesn't look like a Porsche 917

but I'd rather have that than a Porsche.

Only just came across this looks good.
Have you come across this site
list of manufactures and products from 1945 and the
t250-300-400 pages

Thanks, Beardy!
Yes, that is a very good source!
Nice to see you here. I got fed up with the new management of the other camping site, so I folded my tent.

It was nice to see some of your work again.
Only just started to have a look at the scenery so will keep a foot in each camp.

Wonderful project.
I don't really feel qualified to off any advice, only to comment that it would be fun if the finished article retained some of its woodiness rather than being totally resin-ified!

I see what you mean!
But, some mistakes from the beginning and a rather complex form, have caused me to use quite a lot of styrene and putty. There is no going back to the wood!
With some earlier builds, I have been tempted to leave them woody. These look pretty cool before finishing...

In the end, I ”resinified” them anyway.
The Goggo is slowly coming on. I found the front wings to be too clumsy and rounded, I have sharpened them up. Looks more Goggoish in my eyes.

With the horrible world news, this is a distraction.

I carved away too much of the tail, so I had to build it up again with milliput.
It is slowly taking shape.
