are independent front wheels any advantage ?
on either wood or plastic ?
if so why ?

my thinking is that if , as Alan says and the tripod method is used , then in corners only 1 front wheel ( in theory ) could touch the track anyway 
but if as you suggest , the 'stabilizer' method , for wood tracks , both front wheels could contact the track , but would the difference in relative speeds ( couldn't think of another way to describe ) be great enough to affect the car adversely / noticeably ? 

my oh my this hobby is like a very very large onion
