As a Trader, it would be beneficial to have the ability to edit my posts in the Traders' section much like I can on SFI ..... Beer

Hello Gents

This is my first "official " post here, so first of all congratulations with setting up the new forum, new beginnings a fresh start  Yes

I understand all the concerns mod and administration wise about the wish to keeps things controllable  by limiting the edit time.

But I too was a frequent user of the un limited edit permissions I once had on "the Other" forum.
As some of you may know I do tend to write long post, or aas they say in the creative industry "long copy"
I try to create content that will withstand the test of time, as you guys confirmed yourself "Content is King" and is what attracts members.
Writing one post can take me several day's, and very often when someone replies and asks a question on a topic I already posted about I uses the edit function to copy parts, code and HTML form my earlier posts.

As you may know I run my own website with a small forum, there I have the possibilities to give each member a different status with different permissions (like a longer or even indefinite edit time)
I don't know how the ACP on this forum works, but working with privileges might work here as well.

Like for GergK a trader status?
And for members that write "long copy"

Off course such priveliges would have to be earned..and would be subject to cancellation when abused...but that would not be a too hard strain on moderation ;)

With kind regards
Tamar

Welcome Tamar Wavegreen ,
some good ideas there, I am sure we can look into it.

One thing that might help with your long posts that take days to put together which I don't think is available on SFI - you can always save a draft before posting. Thus you can create it at your leisure over time then post when ready. Just click on 'save as draft' at the bottom of the reply window. You can access your saved draft copies via the user CP.

Its not good practice to create postings piecemeal. Once text/images are saved to a website they are accessible and "fools and bairns shouldn't see unfinished work".
Even in the slot car world there have been situations where companies have prepared their new release announcements and people have found them on the web before the press embargo date.

That is a good extra feature, will def make good use of that.

Welcome Tamar, nice to see you here.

We're still working together on the best way to do things here, so all thoughts are welcome. I think there may be a possibility of doing what you're suggesting, I'll have to look into it.

Regarding long posts, I always write them on a word processor first, as I've had posts just disappear before I've finished them on SFI.

Excellent ideas from everyone, I agree with everyone of you all in one part or another in your replies, eg taking days to write a reply... yes my hand is up etc.

As proposed a trial of limited hours is great and appreciated. Thanks

But mostly like this I have been typing up in Notepad, save it as the url for response, edit, save, repeat until I am happy

fyi, for clarity I am not, nor have I ever been any level of administration and operations of any other forums. Am I active on these other forums, honestly, yes, is this going to be in some way, a conflict of interest? Security? NDA's? sorry for the ramble, I am happy with this, for now...

edit: I am not putting my hat in the ring so to speak. I have many other things going on and can not give the time requirements and no I was not offered anything just being transparent. cheers

RE: Editing Posts - no time limit - JasonB - 9th-Jun-19

No Johnno, there will be no conflict of interest, because our aim is much the same as every other slot car place, to promote the hobby. We see ourselves as working in co-operation with them, not in competition.

But we might well do things differently to SCI, or SFI. One of the ways we might differ, and what's been suggested here, is to allow a longer period for trusted posters to edit their own posts. But we won't be opening up the admin section, so it won't make any difference if someone posts elsewhere, or even if they are a mod, or admin on another forum.

The defining factor will be whether we feel a poster can be trusted not to abuse the privilege, and that will have to be established either by past relationships, or by a decent length of time on here for us to judge.

I think we'll probably also give consideration to the type of content members post. Some posts are more involved than others, and so have more need of editing. High quality, long lasting or evergreen posts, are also more likely to benefit.

But of course, all of this is still under discussion, and we haven't had chance to look at the most practical way to do it.

RE: Editing Posts - no time limit - Johnno - 9th-Jun-19

Hi Jason, at the very least consideration and discussion does happen in the background and I commend you all for the great deal of effort put in so far here.

That is a huge difference there and as I mentioned it actually comes down to Security and Privacy and $$

I agree that moderator and admin are very high positions, especially Admin, well, we all know what admin is for so it should be used and treated as such, High Risk. Anyways rambling again, keep up the discussions thanks again

RE: Editing Posts - no time limit - JasonB - 10th-Jun-19

Thanks Johnno.

What happens here isn't just up to admin, it's up to everyboody, hence this discussion. Wherever possible we'll discuss things openly, and take ideas on board.
