Nineteen of us pitched up to test cars in preparation for the autumn's Digital Saturdays, which start in ten days time with the 2026 WHO Goodwood Revival.

Although we'd shifted the test night from its regular August slot, the summer weather carried over - a proper hot day seeing plenty of people in shorts and t-shirts. Phil was using the evening to check out whether he could make the jump from home digital racing to our club system - and it looked like he could. Some racers had one or two cars to try out, others had a dozen or more. Plenty of work went on during the evening...

Our 2027 season equals this year's record of 33 events at the Barn, with exactly the same events on the calendar. There are some tweaks to the dates. The three WHO Digital GT Championship Wednesdays revert to the third Wednesday of the month, two weeks after the monthly HO race. The WHO Goodwood Revival returns to its usual slot in September, with the Digital Test Night moving back to a jam-packed August. Both July and August see four events at the Barn - another action-packed summer holiday programme, which has proved very popular over the past two years.

Race fees remain at £3 adults / £2 under-16s on Wednesday nights and £6 adults / £4 under-16s for the Digital Saturdays. The Slot Rally GB Championship event in July is hosted by the club - fees and regs will be publicised in due course by the Slot Rally GB organisers.

More details about our WHO Slot Rally, Scalextric Digital and HO scale formats and regulations for next season will follow very soon.

Our August Scalextric digital evening coincided with a rare 90% partial solar eclipse, so we thought it best to combine the two. Twenty-four racers came along, plus another five to see the eclipse - all sharing one pair of eclipse glasses (1999 vintage) and a colander. 

It was all rather entertaining  Cool

As for the racing, Simon had designed us a new fast-flowing circuit that filled pretty much the whole of the Barn...

Our 24 racers were divided into six teams of four, each featuring a young driver, a Gold or Silver seeded driver and a rookie. The Nascars started rolling at 7.25pm, a little later than usual, with the plan being a shortened race of two 20 minute segments...

It really was a quick circuit and there were plenty of fuel stops in the first 20 minutes (the tyre simulation would be added for the second segment). Oliver and Ryan's teams battled it out, both finishing on 99 laps - Isaac's team two laps behind in third. Eight laps separated the entire field at half way...

Twenty-three of us enjoyed an excellent night of Scalextric digital racing at the Barn at the start of July. Taking the opportunity to try out our WHO digital format for the first time were Chas, Dick and Jo. For the less experienced, it was the chance of some valuable track time and loads of pit stop practice.

On Wednesday 26 August, we'll host our first WHO Dakar Rally Raid Fun Night, featuring two SCX and two Ninco off-road stages. One of the SCX stages will be reserved for vehicles with the longer drop arms (i.e. SCX, older Avant, Scaleauto Dakar, Mitoos etc.), the other three catering for all Rally Raid vehicles with drop arms and suspension. 

Suitable club cars and controllers will be ready for duty on each stage. So you don't have to have a vehicle to experience the fun. 

Although advertised as a 'fun night' there will be a competitive edge. The plan is to have at least some of the evening dedicated to timed runs.

If you fancy a trip to the south coast, let us know. Doors open at 6pm and we'll run through to 9-9.30pm. Entry is £3 for adults, £2 for under-16s.

We are at The Barn, English Martyrs Church Hall, Goring Way, Goring-by-Sea, West Sussex BN12 4UE. If you search 'Worthing HO Racing' in any navigation app, you'll find us. There's parking on the slip road outside the Barn and in the car park just next to the church. Goring-by-Sea railway station is 5 minutes walk away and various local buses (including Stagecoach 701 & 11) stop outside in both directions. The Barn is wheelchair accessible and has a disabled toilet cubicle.]]>

The second running of our WHO Summer stages saw 24 drivers and 64 cars take to four stages, all of which had been used for the recent Slot Rally GB event, but with some modifications...

1. Friston Forest: SCX and Scalextric Classic (plus trees!!)
2. Jupp's Farm: Ninco off-road (a new configuration for this event)
3. Burpham & Wepham: Ninco tarmac (a longer version for this event)
4: Roundstone: Scalextric Sport (slightly changed from its first running)

There was no specific shakedown stage this time, with short runs permitted on Roundstone to test any new cars.

We welcomed Lee and Cedric from Solent Slot Car Club and Neil who'd joined us for the evening all the way from St Albans Slot Car Club.

It featured two of the custom rally loops from the 2021 WHO Rally Sprint proxy - Oli's donut loop and Simon's teardrop. All slippy Scalextric Sport track, making it much more of a challenge than it looks at first glance.

In addition, we had Johnny's Workshop (3D printed + braid), the Ford Ice Rink (routed foamboard + copper tape) and the Burpham & Wepham stage (Ninco + loops) as it was originally intended with lots of radius 1s. We'll see more of those in action soon...]]>

Nineteen racers joined us for our second Digital Saturday of the year and the climax of the 2026 WHO GT Championship.

Mike's version of Suzuka is a fixture on the WHO calendar. Not the easiest of tracks to put together, but most definitely worth it. A fast lap is a challenge and with not much between the drivers, it is difficult to overtake - a successful manoeuvre has to be planned and executed perfectly.

The highlight of the day is the Suzuka 1000 - a thousand lap race that takes around four hours (4 hours 12 minutes last year). Before that, we throw in a GT pairs race to help us all get up to speed and refresh our knowledge of the track...

Cars racing in the Suzuka 1000 are not permitted and models we wouldn't normally see in the WHO GT Championship are encouraged. This year we had two Carrera cars - a BMW Z4 and and McLaren 720S - plus a diverse mix of Scalextric models, including a Jaguar XKR, Aston Martin DBR9 and a Ford GTE.

The format was similar to the Goodwood St Mary's race - each driver races a 10 minute heat and the two scores for each pair are added to give the team total. There is the option for each driver to drive a different car, but most pairs chose to share the same car this year.

The early target was set by Jeremy and Andy who raced Jeremy's Bentley in the first two heats - their 75 laps was five ahead of Isaac and Kev, whose new model Aston Martin Vantage sat in second place. Birthday-boy Dean was a bit disappointed that his Carrera McLaren didn't go as well as in practice, Alex deciding to swap to his Scalextric Jaguar for his run in the fourth and final heat. The other Carrera runner got off to a disastrous start - the hastily-added ballast interfering with the front axle and wrecking Oliver's ten minutes. Terry set a respectable 32 laps in his heat, once the axle was freed.

Mike D was doing double duty in two of his cars, which was a good thing... The Ferrari F430's chip failed in Mike's heat, John faring much better after the car was repaired. Sharing a Porsche 911 RSR with Ash, Mike banged in a 37 lap heat to jump Isaac and Kev, but fell short of Jeremy and Andy's score by two laps...

In stark contrast to the record-breaking May heatwave a fortnight ago, waterproofs and winter woollies were in order the day before the trip to St Albans for round three of the 2026 Slot Rally GB Championship, sponsored by Staffs Slot Cars. The weather did pick up a bit for the Sunday, which meant the WHO bus haemorrhaged passengers - Mike and Terry going to the T20 cricket at Hove and Phil a last-minute cancellation. So it was just me whizzing round an mostly empty A24 and M25 early on Sunday morning.

Nascott Wood St Albans Slot Car Club have been busy embracing slot rally - nine stages greeted us in the gym of their fabulous new home at Margaret Wix primary school. Five were routed wood, three were permanent layouts using plastic track (Classic, Ninco and Sport) and just one Ninco track built for the day. There were a range of power supplies (from 9v to 15v) and various timing platforms. They certainly looked great in the big colourful hall, with Rally HQ and a large pit area just through the door in the cafeteria.

There was a little bit of excitement with a pre-release sample of Scalextric's new Toyota Celica GT-Four on show and Marc taking some pictures for Slot Car Magazine. More exciting was a former club member bringing the contents of his loft along to sell. Quite a few people did very well. I happily took home a box of a dozen nearly-new Ninco NC5 motors for less than what you'd pay for one new one.

I do like those Ninco motors - and have plans to add one to my SCX Fiat 124 Spyder for next season. The Subaru had new wheels after its disastrous trip to Farnborough and the expectation was high for the Porsche 911 SC after a Classic podium two weeks ago.

Groups were starting their timed runs when I arrived just before 9am and my group - John, Wayne, Alexis and Rob - began racing on Abbott's Park half an hour later...

Seven times around a fast and long permanent Ninco track was a good way to warm up, although there were enough tricky bits to keep the marshals busy. Unsurprisingly, John was one top form from the off, with Wayne not far behind. My cars got steadily faster - starting with the SCX Fiat to learn the stage, then the Ninco Lancia, Porsche and Subaru. I was the only one in the group not to have a Targa Florio entry, but Wayne joined me in not running an SRC Porsche 914/6 GT - his Classic car was a quick MSC De Tomaso Pantera. Rob and John both had NSR Porsche 991 GT3s for Modern, Wayne a Ninco Lancer-bodied Slot.it DTM.

Alexis opted for no Modern entry, but two Classic cars - a 3D-chassied SCX Lancia Fulvia to go with her SRC Porsche 914 - plus an SRC Peugeot 205 T16 in 80s/90s and Slot.it Alfa Romeo 33/3 for Targa. As a relative slot rally novice, Alexis started a bit crashy, but successfully found her pace during the day to bang in some good runs with all four cars.

For our second stage, we moved a few feet to another Ninco layout, Margaret's Whip - which was built for the day and included some challenging Inner Radius esses and a hill with that bumpy off-road track surface. My Ninco cars should have eaten up this stage, but I just didn't attack it like rally masters John and Wayne. At least my cars were happy over the bumpy stuff - both Rob and Alexis lost time with frustrating de-slots during their 5 lap runs.

Snow Blind was our next challenge and I was first on the stage. I did attack the ten laps, getting a nice bit of rear-end slide to get round the tight hairpins, which not every driver or car managed. I really enjoyed the flow of the stage and was finally happy with my cars. The Lancia 037 was looking good, but one off handed fastest time for my quartet to the Subaru by just under two seconds...

Seven laps round the Quack Track would be our final action before a well-deserved tea-break. This was a highly unusual stage, built from Scalextric Sport track and featuring a steep slope up to rally loop that sat in the centre of the layout...

The name came from some ducks, which made up just one part of some imaginative and really well executed scenics. Timing was via a Carrera bridge, which didn't want to play with the low cars and occasionally a shadow triggered a ghost lap. So those with Targa cars and SRC 914s needed assistance from a tape 'shark-fin' to successfully trigger all seven laps.

My SCX Fiat was high enough for the timing beam, but well off the pace - pretty much every driver struggling with at least one of their cars on what was a challenging layout.

I do like those Ninco motors - and have plans to add one to my SCX Fiat 124 Spyder for next season. The Subaru had new wheels after its disastrous trip to Farnborough and the expectation was high for the Porsche 911 SC after a Classic podium two weeks ago.

Groups were starting their timed runs when I arrived just before 9am and my group - John, Wayne, Alexis and Rob - began racing on Abbott's Park half an hour later...

Seven times around a fast and long permanent Ninco track was a good way to warm up, although there were enough tricky bits to keep the marshals busy. Unsurprisingly, John was one top form from the off, with Wayne not far behind. My cars got steadily faster - starting with the SCX Fiat to learn the stage, then the Ninco Lancia, Porsche and Subaru. I was the only one in the group not to have a Targa Florio entry, but Wayne joined me in not running an SRC Porsche 914/6 GT - his Classic car was a quick MSC De Tomaso Pantera. Rob and John both had NSR Porsche 991 GT3s for Modern, Wayne a Ninco Lancer-bodied Slot.it DTM.

Alexis opted for no Modern entry, but two Classic cars - a 3D-chassied SCX Lancia Fulvia to go with her SRC Porsche 914 - plus an SRC Peugeot 205 T16 in 80s/90s and Slot.it Alfa Romeo 33/3 for Targa. As a relative slot rally novice, Alexis started a bit crashy, but successfully found her pace during the day to bang in some good runs with all four cars.

For our second stage, we moved a few feet to another Ninco layout, Margaret's Whip - which was built for the day and included some challenging Inner Radius esses and a hill with that bumpy off-road track surface. My Ninco cars should have eaten up this stage, but I just didn't attack it like rally masters John and Wayne. At least my cars were happy over the bumpy stuff - both Rob and Alexis lost time with frustrating de-slots during their 5 lap runs.

Snow Blind was our next challenge and I was first on the stage. I did attack the ten laps, getting a nice bit of rear-end slide to get round the tight hairpins, which not every driver or car managed. I really enjoyed the flow of the stage and was finally happy with my cars. The Lancia 037 was looking good, but one off handed fastest time for my quartet to the Subaru by just under two seconds...

Seven laps round the Quack Track would be our final action before a well-deserved tea-break. This was a highly unusual stage, built from Scalextric Sport track and featuring a steep slope up to rally loop that sat in the centre of the layout...

The name came from some ducks, which made up just one part of some imaginative and really well executed scenics. Timing was via a Carrera bridge, which didn't want to play with the low cars and occasionally a shadow triggered a ghost lap. So those with Targa cars and SRC 914s needed assistance from a tape 'shark-fin' to successfully trigger all seven laps.

My SCX Fiat was high enough for the timing beam, but well off the pace - pretty much every driver struggling with at least one of their cars on what was a challenging layout.

The short trip to Farnborough is almost a local round for us - 47 miles from the Barn and about an hour and a quarter driving time. Mike was our chauffeur and he took us on a picturesque trip through the glorious countryside of the Petworth Estate and Rother valley, before re-joining civilisation for a few miles of dual carriageway. It was warm when we left the coastal plain at 8am and only got hotter as we headed inland and the sun rose in the sky. It would become the hottest UK May temperature on record.

There was no surprise that school caretaker and slot rally track-builder Lawrence had St Peter's school optimised to keep those temperatures as low as possible. We didn't want any heat-related health emergencies. Lights were off, windows open and big fans kept the air moving. The WHO continent and our Bournemouth buddy Steve commandeered the staff room, which was on the shaded side of the building and had a fridge full of cold drinks.

Oliver was at his first Slot Rally away day, having recently won two club events and attended Slot Rally GB Saturdays at the Barn. Phil and myself were back for a third visit to Farnborough Park Scalextric Club, along with Mike who missed out last year. Terry was a last-minute cancellation, Jeremy taking a season-long Sunday sabbatical - and we couldn't get Gareth back to his old junior school. Maybe next year...

Cars wise, Mike had borrowed a Ninco Impreza from Steve, having forgotten it was four cars at Slot Rally GB. Oliver had quite a few options to choose from, but plumped for an SRC Porsche 914, a very quick Porsche 934 with 3D printed chassis, a Scaleauto Ford RS200 and another Ninco Impreza. Phil also had a Ninco Impreza, together with a Capri and Peugeot from SRC and a Targa Florio Porsche 911. Steve also was running the Targa Florio class with a Porsche Carrera 6. His rally cars were a SRC Peugeot, SRC Porsche 914 a new Fly EVO Lancia 037 - but no Ninco Impreza. As usual, I went with three Nincos - Impreza, Lancia 037 and Porsche 911SC - plus the little SCX Fiat 124 Spyder going first to learn each stage...

The third running of our WHO Spring stages saw 21 drivers and 56 cars take to four stages, three of which were familiar and the other - Burpham & Wepham - was built from scratch during set-up...

1. Friston Forest: SCX and Scalextric Classic
2. Jupp's Farm: Ninco off-road (updated for 2026)
3. Burpham & Wepham: Ninco tarmac
4: Johnny's Workshop (anti-clockwise): 3D printed and braid

Johnny's Workshop (clockwise) was run as the shakedown stage, with direction changed for the timed runs.

Chad joined us for his first taste of slot rally action, running a borrowed Avant Slot Toyota Yaris WRC2 and the club cars. Newer racers with only one car are now permitted to also run in the club car category. Simon M was the other contender - running his Scalextric Impreza WRX alongside the club cars.

ASTCOM-One had an enforced car change after their woes last month, Simon's Chupa Chups Mercedes coming in for Alex's Audi. At AIM-9, Mike had prepared a Ferrari F430 GT, picked up from the Weevil's swap meet for a tenner. Apparently not the easiest car to work on, it looked quick and sounded a bit noisy in practice.

At seven we had a driver briefing - and a timely reminder about driving standards. Then is was the two-minute Super-Pole qualifying - the drivers taking part would be starting the race...
