Slot Rally GB - Round Three - St Albans

In stark contrast to the record-breaking May heatwave a fortnight ago, waterproofs and winter woollies were in order the day before the trip to St Albans for round three of the 2026 Slot Rally GB Championship, sponsored by Staffs Slot Cars. The weather did pick up a bit for the Sunday, which meant the WHO bus haemorrhaged passengers - Mike and Terry going to the T20 cricket at Hove and Phil a last-minute cancellation. So it was just me whizzing round an mostly empty A24 and M25 early on Sunday morning.
Five were routed wood, three were permanent layouts using plastic track (Classic, Ninco and Sport) and just one Ninco track built for the day. There were a range of power supplies (from 9v to 15v) and various timing platforms. They certainly looked great in the big colourful hall, with Rally HQ and a large pit area just through the door in the cafeteria.
There was a little bit of excitement with a pre-release sample of Scalextric's new Toyota Celica GT-Four on show and Marc taking some pictures for Slot Car Magazine. More exciting was a former club member bringing the contents of his loft along to sell. Quite a few people did very well. I happily took home a box of a dozen nearly-new Ninco NC5 motors for less than what you'd pay for one new one.
I do like those Ninco motors - and have plans to add one to my SCX Fiat 124 Spyder for next season. The Subaru had new wheels after its disastrous trip to Farnborough and the expectation was high for the Porsche 911 SC after a Classic podium two weeks ago.

Groups were starting their timed runs when I arrived just before 9am and my group - John, Wayne, Alexis and Rob - began racing on Abbott's Park half an hour later...
Seven times around a fast and long permanent Ninco track was a good way to warm up, although there were enough tricky bits to keep the marshals busy. Unsurprisingly, John was one top form from the off, with Wayne not far behind. My cars got steadily faster - starting with the SCX Fiat to learn the stage, then the Ninco Lancia, Porsche and Subaru. I was the only one in the group not to have a Targa Florio entry, but Wayne joined me in not running an SRC Porsche 914/6 GT - his Classic car was a quick MSC De Tomaso Pantera. Rob and John both had NSR Porsche 991 GT3s for Modern, Wayne a Ninco Lancer-bodied Slot.it DTM.
Alexis opted for no Modern entry, but two Classic cars - a 3D-chassied SCX Lancia Fulvia to go with her SRC Porsche 914 - plus an SRC Peugeot 205 T16 in 80s/90s and Slot.it Alfa Romeo 33/3 for Targa. As a relative slot rally novice, Alexis started a bit crashy, but successfully found her pace during the day to bang in some good runs with all four cars.
For our second stage, we moved a few feet to another Ninco layout, Margaret's Whip - which was built for the day and included some challenging Inner Radius esses and a hill with that bumpy off-road track surface. My Ninco cars should have eaten up this stage, but I just didn't attack it like rally masters John and Wayne. At least my cars were happy over the bumpy stuff - both Rob and Alexis lost time with frustrating de-slots during their 5 lap runs.
Snow Blind was our next challenge and I was first on the stage. I did attack the ten laps, getting a nice bit of rear-end slide to get round the tight hairpins, which not every driver or car managed. I really enjoyed the flow of the stage and was finally happy with my cars. The Lancia 037 was looking good, but one off handed fastest time for my quartet to the Subaru by just under two seconds...
Seven laps round the Quack Track would be our final action before a well-deserved tea-break. This was a highly unusual stage, built from Scalextric Sport track and featuring a steep slope up to rally loop that sat in the centre of the layout...
The name came from some ducks, which made up just one part of some imaginative and really well executed scenics. Timing was via a Carrera bridge, which didn't want to play with the low cars and occasionally a shadow triggered a ghost lap. So those with Targa cars and SRC 914s needed assistance from a tape 'shark-fin' to successfully trigger all seven laps.
The short trip to Farnborough is almost a local round for us - 47 miles from the Barn and about an hour and a quarter driving time. Mike was our chauffeur and he took us on a picturesque trip through the glorious countryside of the Petworth Estate and Rother valley, before re-joining civilisation for a few miles of dual carriageway. It was warm when we left the coastal plain at 8am and only got hotter as we headed inland and the sun rose in the sky. It would become the hottest UK May temperature on record.
There was no surprise that school caretaker and slot rally track-builder Lawrence had St Peter's school optimised to keep those temperatures as low as possible. We didn't want any heat-related health emergencies. Lights were off, windows open and big fans kept the air moving. The WHO continent and our Bournemouth buddy Steve commandeered the staff room, which was on the shaded side of the building and had a fridge full of cold drinks.
Oliver was at his first Slot Rally away day, having recently won two club events and attended Slot Rally GB Saturdays at the Barn. Cars wise, Mike had borrowed a Ninco Impreza from Steve, having forgotten it was four cars at Slot Rally GB. Oliver had quite a few options to choose from, but plumped for an SRC Porsche 914, a very quick Porsche 934 with 3D printed chassis, a Scaleauto Ford RS200 and another Ninco Impreza. Phil also had a Ninco Impreza, together with a Capri and Peugeot from SRC and a Targa Florio Porsche 911. Steve also was running the Targa Florio class with a Porsche Carrera 6. His rally cars were a SRC Peugeot, SRC Porsche 914 a new Fly EVO Lancia 037 - but no Ninco Impreza. As usual, I went with three Nincos - Impreza, Lancia 037 and Porsche 911SC - plus the little SCX Fiat 124 Spyder going first to learn each stage...
The third running of our WHO Spring stages saw 21 drivers and 56 cars take to four stages, three of which were familiar and the other - Burpham & Wepham - was built from scratch during set-up...

1. Friston Forest: SCX and Scalextric Classic
2. Jupp's Farm: Ninco off-road (updated for 2026)
3. Burpham & Wepham: Ninco tarmac
4: Johnny's Workshop (anti-clockwise): 3D printed and braid

Johnny's Workshop (clockwise) was run as the shakedown stage, with direction changed for the timed runs.

Chad joined us for his first taste of slot rally action, running a borrowed Avant Slot Toyota Yaris WRC2 and the club cars. Newer racers with only one car are now permitted to also run in the club car category. Simon M was the other contender - running his Scalextric Impreza WRX alongside the club cars.

ASTCOM-One had an enforced car change after their woes last month, Simon's Chupa Chups Mercedes coming in for Alex's Audi. At AIM-9, Mike had prepared a Ferrari F430 GT, picked up from the Weevil's swap meet for a tenner. Apparently not the easiest car to work on, it looked quick and sounded a bit noisy in practice.

At seven we had a driver briefing - and a timely reminder about driving standards. Then is was the two-minute Super-Pole qualifying - the drivers taking part would be starting the race...
Our 2026 WHO Digital GT Championship sees six teams - led by our Gold-rated drivers - race over three two-hour races on Wednesday evenings, followed by a four-hour, double-points championship finale at our June GT Saturday.

The WHO GT cars run to our local interpretation of the DiSCA GT4 Scalextric Clubman rules, requiring mostly standard Scalextric parts to be used throughout. The older Sidewinder models are permitted to use a vac-formed interior as a Balance of Performance measure.

Teams are strictly Pro-Am - our driver ratings based on performances across all our WHO events and weighted towards individual races. There are six Gold and Six Silver 'Pro' drivers, with all other drivers rated as Bronze. Pro-Am means that at least one Bronze-rated driver must race on each team and must share the driving time equally. A two-minute driver change window straddles the end of stints at 20, 40, 60 and 80 minutes, giving six stints in a two-hour race. A three-driver team shares the six stints equally - two each. A four-driver team must share the six stints equally between Pro (Gold/Silver) and Am (Bronze) drivers, ie Bronze drivers must race at least three stints.

Like last year, we start the championship racing on Barns Hatch - Mike's interpretation of the Kent circuit's Grand Prix layout...

Other team news...

Mike's newly-named AIM-9 will be running side-winder cars again this season. He'll be joined by Steve Croft and Stephen McCann.

Écurie Escargot will be resurrecting the red & white Aston Martin Vantage V12. Rob Allison joins the team as deputy, alongside Andy.

Gearzilla Racing are back with the same SunEnergy Mercedes AMG GT3. Oliver will be racing alongside Rob Bean. Isaac is another regular driver, but its his sixteenth birthday on Wednesday and he's doing other things...

Shift Happens! is Dean's team for 2026. Rookies Kinsley, Jaxson and Mike make up an inexperienced, but enthusiastic quartet.

Terry's first season as a Gold driver will see Laps in Concentration on the grid and Ash as the Silver driver. There's a good chance we'll see another Vantage V12.
I decided not to run the new Targo Florio class. Much as I love the real-world event and the cars, I do slot rallying to run rally cars. But I did enjoy watching some very fast Italian machinery - Terry and Phil shared Phil's NSR Lola, Colin ran an NSR GT40, one Steve had an NSR Porsche 908 and the other a rapid Policar Ferrari 312PB.

Nicely warmed up (and my Subaru a bit bashed by the gates), we moved on to the Ninco Raid track. This should have been a favourite for the WHO racers - we always have a stage with off-road track at our slot rally club nights...
Not surprisingly, some of the Targa cars did not enjoy this stage - the exception being the Policar Ferrari, which set the fastest time of any car in our group. Of my four, it was the Porsche that was quickest - the only time it would beat both the Lancia and the Subaru.

Another stage completed and we were back to the other end of the hall for Wayne's World - a compact routed stage fitted to a paste table. Mike was making notes for a possible future WHO track...

This one's all about rhythm and not bashing the grassy banks. I was happy with my runs - getting quicker with each car.

Some of the groups were breaking for lunch after three stages, but we continued with a fourth - the Ninco Snow stage, which proved trickier than it looks...

Going first, I wasn't 100% satisfied by my performance, the Lancia going quickest - a tenth of a second faster than the Subaru. The Targa cars were blisteringly fast on this stage, with Steve's Ferrari quickest of them all.

Time for lunch and to catch up with some of the other groups. Marc and Martin from St Albans Slot Car Club were enjoying the big Ninco 'Stage 7'...

Our 2026 Scalextric digital season continues on Wednesday with another Nascar club car team race and Trans-Am pairs race - a perfect introduction to our digital racing formats and RCS64 race management software.

We do ask that new racers complete at least one (and preferably two) Nascar & Trans-Am evening to progress to our GT Championship and the Saturday events. During the evening we gradually introduce the tyre wear, fuel consumption and weather features of the RCS64 software. Team captains will get you up to speed with the nuts and bolts of digital racing - and to the subtleties of race strategy.

Doors open at 6.30pm for practice and digital driving school. Teams are allocated and we start racing with evenly-matched club cars as near to 7pm as possible. An hour of action is divided into three or four segments of either 15 or 20 minutes, including driver changes every five minutes. Teams swap cars at each break - winners with last place, second with fifth etc. After an hour of racing, total laps are added up and prizes awarded at around 8.30.

Trans-Am cars are back for the pairs race for 2026-8. Scalextric and Pioneer models of cars that raced in the Trans-Am series between 1966 and 1972 are eligible. The usual Trans-Am format is two 8-minute qualifying heats, with a driver change at half-distance. The cars completing the most laps in their 8-minute heat automatically qualify for a the feature race, the other six battle it out for the remaining places in an 8-minute ‘B-Final’. And that usually takes us up to around 9.30pm - or sometimes a little later.

The whole evening costs just £3 for adults and £2 for under-16s. All equipment is provided for the team race. Those without a Trans-Am car will need to negotiate to share a ride. We do ask that racers aged 13 and under bring a responsible adult with them.

Expect plenty of snow and ice for the first WHO Slot Rally club night of the year - which takes place on the eve of the real Monte Carlo Rally.

Doors open at 6.30pm for sign-on and allocation to groups for the evening. The Johnny's Workshop stage will be available for a shakedown - to make sure your cars and controllers are functioning as you want them.

The competitive stages for this one are:

1. Friston Forest - SCX and Scalextric Classic, featuring SCX ice effect track.
2. Jupp's Farm 2026 (short version) - Ninco with some patches of ice and extra rough terrain
3. Titnore Lane - Ninco tarmac with plenty of ice track and elevations
4. Ford Ice Rink - routed foamboard

All four stages are fitted with a UK club 3-pin 2 amp socket and standard club wiring (brake wired -ve and L terminal wired +ve). Power is 12V DC, apart from the Ice Rink, which runs at 10V.

As always, the aim is to get through all four stages in the quickest possible time.

Our WHO Slot Rally events are for 1:32 scale analogue rally cars running to our local interpretation of Slot Rally GB regulations - see here. The important highlights are that cars must be fitted with an inline motor and must feature a driver and co-driver sitting side-by-side.

Each driver can enter one car per class - Classic, 80s-90s and Modern Rally. Club cars and controllers are available on each stage. We will be noting the best times for standard SCX and Scalextric cars (magnets must be removed, weight can be added and tyres and braid may be replaced - otherwise no modifications).

Entry is £3 per person for the whole evening, £2 for under-16s.

Doors open at 6.15 for practice, with the heats scheduled to start just before 7. We aim to finish all the finals by 9.30pm. Race fees remain £3 for adults and £2 for under-16s, with an HO season costing £32 up-front for 12 races and the test night. An under-16 HO season ticket is £21.

There are some big changes to our WHO Mod events this year. Although the cars will look very familiar with the lexan-bodied Mods and hard-bodied Tuners, things are very different underneath...

In WHO Mod, only the Viper V-SPEC and Bulldog BDR chassis are eligible. The Viper must run Pro4 traction and motor magnets and the Bulldog can run either the N42 or N35 traction magnets available from Slot Cars Direct. Otherwise, the rules are the same - armatures must be 6 ohm or higher and unmodified. We can help you change the magnets in your Viper and Pete has plenty of Pro4 traction magnets in the club shop.

WHO Tuners is also restricted to two chassis - the Bulldog BDR (with N35 traction magnets only) and the AFX Mega-G+ (long and short wheelbases). Pete has plenty of Bulldog chassis and parts for sale in the club shop. Those running in Tuners this season will also be awarded full Club championship points - so the winners of both Mod and Tuners with score 160 points towards the WHO Club championship.
This is a brand new event for 2026 and gives us the opportunity to expand the range of cars we run on the WHO Digital calendar and enjoy another full-day Saturday to cheer us up during the darker months. There are two team races, a pairs race and two individual events to mix things up during the day. As always, doors open for practice at 10am and we aim to finish around 4.30. There are no club cars for our Digital Saturdays and we expect all new racers to have successfully completed at least one Nascar & Trans-Am Wednesday evening event - conveniently these are scheduled for 14 January and 11 February.

Race One is a Pioneer Legends pairs race, which we hope will get us up to speed and learn the track (Mike's version of Meadowdale International Raceway). These little cars have thrilled us on Wednesday nights over the past three years and now have a new home. They will run to the same build regulations as before - if you need a copy of the regs to build a new car, please let us know.

Race Two is Sebring Seventies - a 45-minute team race for Scalextric and Fly models of GT cars that raced at the 12 Hours of Sebring from 1973 to 1977. Eligible cars are:

● Scalextric Porsche 911 3.0 RSR
● Scalextric Chevrolet Corvette L88
● Fly Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB/4
● Fly Porsche 911S
● Fly Porsche 934 and 1977 934/5
● Fly BMW 3.5 CSL IMSA

Only six cars will run, entered by our Gold drivers (or their deputies). Cars should be prepared to Scalextric Tin Top regs. Working lights are preferred, but not essential. At the time of writing, there are five Scalextric Porsches on the grid, with Mike still deciding between a Fly BMW 3.5 CSL and a sixth Porsche...

Race Three is another chance to run the awesome Carrera Classic Nascars. This is an individual race with a heats and finals format. Build regs are on page 14 of the 2026 WHO digital guide.

Race Four is Can-Am - another individual race featuring models of the unrestricted monsters that delighted crowds from 1966 to 1974. We will use brand eligibility and regs from the Goodwood Whitsun Cup and limit entry to genuine Group 7 Can-Am cars (plus the 1965 SCCA precursor): no GT40s, Ferrari 330s or Alfa 33/3s please. This list may be useful...
The Whitsun Cup regs allow for a change of running gear and wheels, so those very nice Fly and Monogram models can be tuned to compete with the George Turner, Slot.it and MR SlotCar cars - which must use a standard 18k Scalextric or PSR AC6 S-Can motor.

The final race is a 500 lap (approximately two-hour) team race into the dark for the new Scalextric LMDh (Le Mans Daytona hybrid) models - currently the Cadillac V-Series.R and Porsche 963. These cars will be provided and prepared by our Gold rated drivers (or their deputy). We will use the same regs as the GT Championship. For 2026 and 2027, the older Scalextric Ford Daytona Prototype (Riley) and Ginetta G60-LT-P1 will also be permitted - if you have one already - but these will be allocated a smaller fuel tank in RCS64. Working lights are essential for this as we’ll turn off the main hall lights and race with the up-lighters.
Twenty-two racers assembled at the Barn for a memorable end-of-season Tin Top Saturday. We welcomed back Jean (of Johnny's Workshop fame) and Simon M joined us for his first Tin Top action.
After 45 minutes of practice, it was time for the first race of the day...

Group A Team Race
Twenty-one drivers (James arrived too late) were divided into six teams for this 30-minute race. Five of our Gold-rated drivers led the teams, with Jeremy stepping up to fill the sixth spot with his WHAM! Racing. Four Sierras were joined by Dean's Aston Mosdell VL Commodore and the WHAM! This race is all about track familiarisation and ironing out any technical glitches. Sadly Gearzilla had a rough time with a less-than-perfect controller and they dropped to the back, eighteen laps in arrears at half distance. The Commodore was leading, thanks to a great opening stint by Ash, the blue AST One Sierra was two laps behind, with the red MFI Sierra in third and the WHAM! BMW not far adrift in fourth.
Alex had hoped to push hard in the final stint, but had to manage a loose rear wheel instead. He successfully defended second spot from a hard-charging Mike, who had pulled away from the BMW in fourth. Ash, Stephen and Dean scored a great win for the Commodore...
Alex had hoped to push hard in the final stint, but had to manage a loose rear wheel instead. He successfully defended second spot from a hard-charging Mike, who had pulled away from the BMW in fourth. Ash, Stephen and Dean scored a great win for the Commodore...
Our final HO event of the year saw a select bunch of racers turn out for the end-of-term goodbye to the Barn. With almost all the championships decided, it was all about the race. Of the sixteen drivers, Oliver K was first to pick up his silverware as our WHO junior rookie of 2025...
Oliver also had the bonus of running all four heats before his home time at 8pm. We have a revised format for 2026, which will mean Oliver and any other under-10s can complete their races at the start of the night.
Voted at our AGM last month, the racers' choice for our final AFX F1 championship round was our Silverstone layout, harking back to the 'proper' configuration of Britain's Grand Prix circuit...
That just left us the A Final, which turned out to be an odd one. A-Final adrenaline + a fast, challenging track = carnage. Andy soon found himself out front and continued to build his lead, until a late-race power drop let second-place Pete unlap himself and start reeling in the leader. Andy asked if anyone was on his lane, but the other three drivers were convinced they were driving their cars. The chequered flag fell with Andy scoring a huge score - but he knew he'd just pipped Pete to the line. A post-race post-mortem showed Oliver's body-less chassis on Andy's lane.
