So for a change I decided to build myself 2 classic Nascars for the event

The 1959 Ford Thunderbird and the 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner

I purchased a starter set with analog cars.  It is for a STEM project with timers and lap counters.  I need the 2 cars to run at almost the same speed.  Putting both cars on the same lane, one is obviously faster.  How can I change the speed without buying a bunch of new parts?  Is adding weight to the faster car the easiest solution?

    A good turnout tonight, 8 drivers and 16 cars over the two events but first, the classics…

    It was great to see the small classics supported as Paul, Chris & Dave raced each other whilst the larger classics driven by Ed, Kev, Brian, Geoff & Andy raced each other.
    .
    Dave borrowed a XK120 off Geoff (thanks Geoff), it’s quick and once Dave got the hang of it was circulating with fast lap times.  He did intend racing a super looking resin Cunningham C4R but it’s not quite ready for our track yet.

    Paul raced his favourite Porsche 356, it was one of two standard class based cars (Ed’s Porsche 908/2 was the other).  An all-rounder kind of car that Paul has also used in Slot Rally.

    Chris raced his MRSlotcar Corvette C1 which is whisper quiet and smooth.  The Thunderslot muscle car tyres giving it plenty of traction and it’s going better than ever before.

    Ed’s previously mentioned Fly Porsche 908/2 was joined by no less than four Ford GT40’s, Andy’s open class Fly GT40, Geoff & Kev racing NSR GT40’s and Brian racing a SlotIt GT40.

    As expected, the larger classics were circulating much quicker than the small classics.

    Andy’s open class GT40 was easily the quickest car on a hot lap but it had to be driven carefully!

    The three prostock GT40’s lined up against each other in Heat #2, three completely different colours which made it easier for marshals.

    As expected, when it comes to this event, SlotIt is the brand of choice with the six Prostock cars split equally as either Group C or LMP.

    Brian’s Porsche 956 was the standout car in this class, it always goes well but tonight set a new benchmark for itself.

    Now Ed raced his Audi particularly well, second in class leading the chasing pack behind Brian’s Porsche.  Geoff’s gold leaf Lola on the same lap as the Audi with the following three cars not that far apart behind as Dave (Porsche), Paul (Audi) & Chris (Porsche) completed the Prostock lineup.

    The other two cars couldn’t be more different, Andy’s Open class, falcon powered, Mack chassied NSR Audi outperforming the rest of the cars for fun as expected, and Kev’s Standard class Ninco BMW V12 showing how well a basic car can go, a big pinion, decent tyres, a better guide and a chunk of lead… yes it was noisy (the Ninco gear should be run-in in a year according to Brian).

    SRF F1 SIDECARS - (we race these every week)



    Although the evening started with eight club members, three left before the Sidecar races.  Chris was working early next day, Ed hasn’t got his Sidecar ready yet and I failed to let Paul know we were racing them so he presumed we weren’t racing them, sorry about that Paul.

    Two big improvers this week, Dave’s yellow outfit going a good couple of tenths quicker with it’s new longer gearing and Geoff’s silver outfit going four tenths faster thanks to fitting NSR tyres (but raced with scrutineers advice to fit 10mm tyres next time instead of 12mm).
    .

    There was another new outfit this week, Brian’s white outfit looks very nice, he was happy with it’s performance first time out but a strange metallic grinding noise which we couldn’t suss out will be investigated by Brian for next week.  Maybe a dry bearing or axle is all it is.

    Both of last week's two flyers were down on pace this week, Andy’s Gulf outfit which managed a 6.1 lap last week and Kev’s fluoro green outfit which managed a 6.3, both struggled to get regular 6.4 lap times this week.  This means the chasing pack is catching up.
    .
    Heat #3 was as close as you’re going to get as Andy & Kev raced side by side for the first minute which was not only enjoyable as a driver but must have looked great for the marshals.  This goes to show how close these all are in performance.

    Here’s a reminder of the setups that seem to work well:
    • Gearing - 3:1 or thereabouts, i.e. 11/34, 12/34 or 12/36.  This gives plenty of acceleration and brakes and more than enough top speed.
    • 10mm wide tyres gives a great selection of tyre choices, tried and tested compounds in this size on BallaYorkley are NSR Alan Mann Untragrips, Thunderslot 002 or 004’s and NSR Zero graining tyres (if you have the patience to true them as they take ages!)
    • A good chunk of ballast down the centre of the chassis seems to work well.
    • A small diameter front tyre so it doesn’t foul the chassis or touch the bodywork.
    • How tight the bodyshell fixing screws are seems to have a big effect on handling, trial & error here.

    A ‘gentleman's agreement’ formulated after a discussion with the SRF design team to keep the racing close for everyone:
    • Slotcarmann Harrier handout motors
    • 10mm wide tyres
    • No tyre treatment once Sidecar racing starts
    • Ballast inside the outfit only

    It is a Scaley/SCX Chaparral 2E, that he wanted to be made to look and run a bit better, which was not that hard  Bigsmile.

    The starting point,.......this is not the actual car (this is a shot stolen from "Images"),...the actual car was a bit worse for wear.

    It is a "Clamshell" design, which is generally not an issue, but, on this car there are slots molded into the upper/lower bodywork, which hold the rear end detail, and these all had to be ground away in order that the bits could be re installed, once the top/bottom body bits were glued.

    I started with the chassis (the easiest part for me), and a single rail (.047) chassis was built,...it has a softish torsional flex, and handles very well with its 18K motor.

    In stark contrast to the record-breaking May heatwave a fortnight ago, waterproofs and winter woollies were in order the day before the trip to St Albans for round three of the 2026 Slot Rally GB Championship, sponsored by Staffs Slot Cars. The weather did pick up a bit for the Sunday, which meant the WHO bus haemorrhaged passengers - Mike and Terry going to the T20 cricket at Hove and Phil a last-minute cancellation. So it was just me whizzing round an mostly empty A24 and M25 early on Sunday morning.

    Nascott Wood St Albans Slot Car Club have been busy embracing slot rally - nine stages greeted us in the gym of their fabulous new home at Margaret Wix primary school. Five were routed wood, three were permanent layouts using plastic track (Classic, Ninco and Sport) and just one Ninco track built for the day. There were a range of power supplies (from 9v to 15v) and various timing platforms. They certainly looked great in the big colourful hall, with Rally HQ and a large pit area just through the door in the cafeteria.

    There was a little bit of excitement with a pre-release sample of Scalextric's new Toyota Celica GT-Four on show and Marc taking some pictures for Slot Car Magazine. More exciting was a former club member bringing the contents of his loft along to sell. Quite a few people did very well. I happily took home a box of a dozen nearly-new Ninco NC5 motors for less than what you'd pay for one new one.

    I do like those Ninco motors - and have plans to add one to my SCX Fiat 124 Spyder for next season. The Subaru had new wheels after its disastrous trip to Farnborough and the expectation was high for the Porsche 911 SC after a Classic podium two weeks ago.

    Groups were starting their timed runs when I arrived just before 9am and my group - John, Wayne, Alexis and Rob - began racing on Abbott's Park half an hour later...

    Seven times around a fast and long permanent Ninco track was a good way to warm up, although there were enough tricky bits to keep the marshals busy. Unsurprisingly, John was one top form from the off, with Wayne not far behind. My cars got steadily faster - starting with the SCX Fiat to learn the stage, then the Ninco Lancia, Porsche and Subaru. I was the only one in the group not to have a Targa Florio entry, but Wayne joined me in not running an SRC Porsche 914/6 GT - his Classic car was a quick MSC De Tomaso Pantera. Rob and John both had NSR Porsche 991 GT3s for Modern, Wayne a Ninco Lancer-bodied Slot.it DTM.

    Alexis opted for no Modern entry, but two Classic cars - a 3D-chassied SCX Lancia Fulvia to go with her SRC Porsche 914 - plus an SRC Peugeot 205 T16 in 80s/90s and Slot.it Alfa Romeo 33/3 for Targa. As a relative slot rally novice, Alexis started a bit crashy, but successfully found her pace during the day to bang in some good runs with all four cars.

    For our second stage, we moved a few feet to another Ninco layout, Margaret's Whip - which was built for the day and included some challenging Inner Radius esses and a hill with that bumpy off-road track surface. My Ninco cars should have eaten up this stage, but I just didn't attack it like rally masters John and Wayne. At least my cars were happy over the bumpy stuff - both Rob and Alexis lost time with frustrating de-slots during their 5 lap runs.

    Snow Blind was our next challenge and I was first on the stage. I did attack the ten laps, getting a nice bit of rear-end slide to get round the tight hairpins, which not every driver or car managed. I really enjoyed the flow of the stage and was finally happy with my cars. The Lancia 037 was looking good, but one off handed fastest time for my quartet to the Subaru by just under two seconds...

    Seven laps round the Quack Track would be our final action before a well-deserved tea-break. This was a highly unusual stage, built from Scalextric Sport track and featuring a steep slope up to rally loop that sat in the centre of the layout...

    The name came from some ducks, which made up just one part of some imaginative and really well executed scenics. Timing was via a Carrera bridge, which didn't want to play with the low cars and occasionally a shadow triggered a ghost lap. So those with Targa cars and SRC 914s needed assistance from a tape 'shark-fin' to successfully trigger all seven laps.

    My SCX Fiat was high enough for the timing beam, but well off the pace - pretty much every driver struggling with at least one of their cars on what was a challenging layout.

My Ninco cars should have eaten up this stage, but I just didn't attack it like rally masters John and Wayne. At least my cars were happy over the bumpy stuff - both Rob and Alexis lost time with frustrating de-slots during their 5 lap runs.

    Snow Blind was our next challenge and I was first on the stage. I did attack the ten laps, getting a nice bit of rear-end slide to get round the tight hairpins, which not every driver or car managed. I really enjoyed the flow of the stage and was finally happy with my cars. The Lancia 037 was looking good, but one off handed fastest time for my quartet to the Subaru by just under two seconds...

    Seven laps round the Quack Track would be our final action before a well-deserved tea-break. This was a highly unusual stage, built from Scalextric Sport track and featuring a steep slope up to rally loop that sat in the centre of the layout...

    The name came from some ducks, which made up just one part of some imaginative and really well executed scenics. Timing was via a Carrera bridge, which didn't want to play with the low cars and occasionally a shadow triggered a ghost lap. So those with Targa cars and SRC 914s needed assistance from a tape 'shark-fin' to successfully trigger all seven laps.

    The short trip to Farnborough is almost a local round for us - 47 miles from the Barn and about an hour and a quarter driving time. Mike was our chauffeur and he took us on a picturesque trip through the glorious countryside of the Petworth Estate and Rother valley, before re-joining civilisation for a few miles of dual carriageway. It was warm when we left the coastal plain at 8am and only got hotter as we headed inland and the sun rose in the sky. It would become the hottest UK May temperature on record.

    There was no surprise that school caretaker and slot rally track-builder Lawrence had St Peter's school optimised to keep those temperatures as low as possible. We didn't want any heat-related health emergencies. Lights were off, windows open and big fans kept the air moving. The WHO continent and our Bournemouth buddy Steve commandeered the staff room, which was on the shaded side of the building and had a fridge full of cold drinks.

Terry was a last-minute cancellation, Jeremy taking a season-long Sunday sabbatical - and we couldn't get Gareth back to his old junior school. Maybe next year...

Oliver had quite a few options to choose from, but plumped for an SRC Porsche 914, a very quick Porsche 934 with 3D printed chassis, a Scaleauto Ford RS200 and another Ninco Impreza. Phil also had a Ninco Impreza, together with a Capri and Peugeot from SRC and a Targa Florio Porsche 911. Steve also was running the Targa Florio class with a Porsche Carrera 6. His rally cars were a SRC Peugeot, SRC Porsche 914 a new Fly EVO Lancia 037 - but no Ninco Impreza. As usual, I went with three Nincos - Impreza, Lancia 037 and Porsche 911SC - plus the little SCX Fiat 124 Spyder going first to learn each stage...

           Here, from the slot car museum in Houston Texas are 3 different Hurricane sets in HO scale, 1/32nd scale, and 1/24th scale. These were actually made by Marusan in Japan and packaged in New Zealand to avoid high tariffs. The 1/24th scale set is the most common with a Lotus 25 and a Ferrari 156. Don't see as many 1/32nd scale sets for some reason. They had a Ford GT and a Porsche 904. The rarest set is the 4 lane HO scale set.This set had a Jaguar XKE, A Buick Rivera, a Ferrari GTO, and a Corvette Stingray. All 4 lane sets had only these cars. This is the only 4 lane set by Marusan / Hurricane ever made and is extremely rare. You will notice some of the internal packaging is written in Japanese. So it was shipped from Japan to New Zealand. While the outer box and instructions are in English. So these were manufactured in New Zealand. All the sets have all their paper work as well.]]>

Sangyo translates to "industry" or "manufacturing" in Japanese and is a common suffix for many trading and industrial companies. Many Japanese companies released a slot car set in the 1960s using already made cars and track from other slot car manufacturers like the 2 rare Pioneer sets we have at the slot car museum. There is a Mitaka company that produced surgical instruments and telescopes , etc which may describe why this set has SS Gauge on the front of the suitcase. Well anyway these sets are leather covered briefcases with lined felt inside. The cars are a 1/32nd scale white BMW 507 ,a red Jaguar XK 120,a white Jaguar XK120, and a white Ford  Thunderbird. All of these cars and the controllers are made by Tokyo Plamo, though the track and fence look like Bandai. The hardtop cars use no clear plastic windows and have no interiors, no drivers, & no wheel covers so the cost can be kept down. The track has rails more for shoes instead of brushes. I could not find any information on these unique briefcase sets in any of my Japanese literature or on the internet. I would of course appreciate any help in finding out more about the company or history of these sets. Its strange that I have been collecting since 1989 & I have never seen or heard of this set and all of a sudden 2 sets appear within a month of each other. Collecting is strange sometimes

It was made by Lou J. Fageol of Detroit. The set sold for $200 in 1948 which is the equivalent of $ [b]2,425.69 today[/b]. Needless to say very very few of these early electric race sets were sold. So underneath the aluminum race track were 2 metal rails shaped in an oval. On these 2 parallel tracks ran 2 extremely heavy .metal type belt driven chassis with a spring loaded magnet. The magnet touched the underside of the aluminum track pulling the diecast race car by its steel steering unit. The set is 36 inches wide by 61 inches long and the cars are 4 1/2 inches long.  When running it makes a very loud noise. I show here the catalog which I think shows a prototype set because the placement of the speed controls are different and it shows a metal wall in the curves which mine never had. The last thing I show was an advertisement for the set in a 1948 Esquire mens magazine for Xmas. I want to thank Don and Chuck for helping me get this incredible set years ago. The only place so see this historical set is here at the museum in Texas !

          This just came into the slot car museum in Houston Texas . Its a 1/32nd scale Gakken race set. The box is huge ! Its 43 1/2 inches long by 19 inches wide. The set was made in 1965 in Japan. The set contains 2 Lotus 30s, 1 gold chrome and 1 silver chrome.The chassis are made for the 1st time in Zircon, a type of plastic which is advertised as lighter and stronger than other types of plastic. Gakken slot cars are very different from all other slot cars in that they were advised by the Tokyo Institute of Technology which is mentioned on the lower right hand corner of the slot car set.. A Professor of engineering by the name of Dr. Shigeo Okeya who is credited with 15 patents helped Gakken develop the cars. I show a photo of him as he appears in the slot car set manual. Gakken also made the set with non chrome Lotus 30s. They also made a 1/32nd scale Lotus 30 in a kit form and a 1/24th scale Ferrari 330P-2 ,both with the Zircon chassis. Later they made a 1/24th scale Ferrari 330P-2 and a Lola T70 with an aluminium chassis that is stamped with the letters PI which we also have at the museum. ]]>

The set contains 2 Lotus 30s, 1 gold chrome and 1 silver chrome.The chassis are made for the 1st time in Zircon, a type of plastic which is advertised as lighter and stronger than other types of plastic. Gakken slot cars are very different from all other slot cars in that they were advised by the Tokyo Institute of Technology which is mentioned on the lower right hand corner of the slot car set.. A Professor of engineering by the name of Dr. Shigeo Okeya who is credited with 15 patents helped Gakken develop the cars. I show a photo of him as he appears in the slot car set manual. Gakken also made the set with non chrome Lotus 30s. They also made a 1/32nd scale Lotus 30 in a kit form and a 1/24th scale Ferrari 330P-2 ,both with the Zircon chassis.
