Scorpius Generation II car decoder development

No issues to speak of, but we mostly run stock Scalextric or cars.

Here's an updated list of Scorpius Gen II car decoder goodies. No doubt a lot of people will be happy [Image: biggrin.png] and about 5 people extremely unhappy.[Image: grump.gif]
So here goes;
1/. Smallest car decoder of its type just 26x13 or 338sq mm.
2/. Full light set with configurable settings including brightness, with wiring and LEDs connected and ready to install thus saving installation space and cost dramatically. World first
3/. Compatible to: Scorpius, SSD, Carrera, SCX Advance, Oxigen, Ninco. World first.
4/. Analogue compatible if using Scorpius controller and WAM.
5/. 5A Mosfet rating for robustness and reliability. World first
6/. Double sided to reduce size.
7/. DPR Compatible
8/. DPR hatch available.
9/. JST plugs on: Power in, motor power out, lights front and rear, hall sensor for ease of install/removal.
10/.Direct DC, now bypass bridge rectifier if ever required.
11/.Improved circuit protection on power in and power out (motor).
12/.Bluetooth/app compatible.
13/.Auto detect. Place car on rails and car decoder will automatically detect which system it is on and change protocols and track comms hardware use automatically. World first.
14/.Back EMF detection for use in future functions. World first.
15/.Hall sensor for use with Oxigen or tacho. World first.
16/.Accelerometer for use with impact front, side, rear collision detection and the ultimate ghost car. World first.

Hi Guys
Just an update on this project. The worlds most advanced car decoder project is on hold while we develop 2 other smaller new chip designs that overlap this design. 
One of the projects is SSD compatible therefore it makes sense to use the smaller project so that knowledge can then be used on this more adventurous project.
I estimate we still get back to this by Sept 2021.

After a 12 months delay due to Covid, the F1 chip, Nano chip and Disk chip pushing in in front we are back into the main course, the Generation II chip now known as the Scorpius MPD or Multi Protocol Decoder.

We have updated the boot loader to the latest and greatest as well as touched up motor drive and brakes as well as implemented a nice function on the controller to change car quickly and easily between Scorpius RF and Bluetooth modes.

Development recommences as we test motor drive and brakes and our new throttle function that quickly and easily puts car into app connect (BLE) mode.

Hi Guys,

    After taking some time out to develop the nano chip, the quick change braid disc for Scalextric, delays in production due to high demand for components, and slow production in early 2020 due to the virus, we have been tweaking design. We are now up to version 4. The product even has an entirely name. It’s now called the MPD or Multi Protocol Decoder. It could even be called the Multi Purpose Decoder.

The idea is to have the MPD power a car, or a lane changer, lap counter, location detector for 4 brands, where applicable for Scorpius, Scalextric, Carrera and SCX.

Current changes add more protection to the board from both braid and motor ends, b eef up the motor drive circuit, add a driver to power SCX car solenoid, upgrade the microprocessor in order to power new hardware, reduce the size significantly of the processor to free up space a huge 24.8 gained), remove the 3 mounting holes to suit the DPR as we have developed a better quick release (board to DPR), which frees up a further 30

We are now using Nordics nRF52840 WLCSP system on chip, a combination microprocessor/radio chip.
Sized at a tiny 3.5x3.2mm or 11.2
Our previous board was This a huge saving in space which can go towards other new components added to the board.
Here’s a picture of the sister 832 chip on another Scorpius product, the nano chip. Which is 9.4x5.0mm
The board shown on left is 3.5x3.2mm.

Scorpius MPD prototype Version 4.0 upgrade list.
Hi guys,
This project would be the most complexed and advanced project ever undertaken for the digital slot car industry. And yes we are up to Version 4 prototype.
The MPD or Multi Protocol Decoder will be the basis for over 24 products. Car decoder for 5 brands, lane changer for 5 brands, location detector for 5 brands, anti collision board for 5 brands. Wireless dongle for 2 brands. Wireless throttle bhoard for 1 brand. A mini wireless analog module for 1 brand.
SOC: NRF52832 upgraded to NRF52840 WLCSP (just 3.2x3.5mm) We need an additional UART for an additional phototransistor circuit. SOC nRF 52832 only has one UART so we have upgraded to nRF 52840.
DPR attachment holes: Removed. 3D printed clip in system DPR to be utilised. Pin system found to take too much space and fiddly.
Track Rectifier: 4 off PMEG3050EP,115 Schottky Diodes 30V 5A
Track Transient Protection: SMF4L18CA TVS 20V Breakdown 400W peak pulse suppression (18V max track voltage recommended)
Motor Drive: Now CSD17318Q2 N-channel MOSFET 30V 20mOhm @ 3.3V 10A plus revised circuitry.
Motor Brake: Now PMPB27EP,115 P-channel MOSFET 30V 30mOhm @ 6V 8.8A
Motor Transient Protection: SMF4L18CA TVS 20V Breakdown 400W peak pulse suppression
Track Current Sensing: Now 33mOhm Resistor and Amplifier (detects motor current)
Motor Back-EMF Sensing: Resistive dividers to analog inputs. Revised circuitry.
Solenoid Driver SCX: AO6604 20V 3.4A  
Additional phototransitor for LB detection: allows for 1 and board or 1 on flylead.
Headlight: 20mA constant current drive, PWM for high/low beam (allows up to 4 LEDs connected in series off board)
Tail/Stoplight: 20mA constant current drive, PWM for tail/stop (allows up to 4 LEDs connected in series off board)
SSD ID LED: 10mA constant current drive (allows up to 2 LEDs connected in series, 1 on board, 1 off board)
Carrera ID LED: 10mA constant current drive (allows up to 2 LEDs connected in series, 1 on board, 1 off board)
3D Accelerometer: Gyro upgraded to 9 axis
Work continues on the version 4 board design which has some massive changes. The extra time taken to complete the project has given us valuable insight and allow these changes to occur, instead of rushing to market, especially in regards to multi brand compatibility and multi purposing. There is a extreme amount of complex firmware to be written. And this of course where the men are sorted from the sheep.
Pretty soon all you will need is a Scorpius controller, Scorpius dongle and Scorpius MPDs to do just about any task possible in regard to digital slot car racing.Possibilities vary of course with regard to different brands.
