News - WRC Brand - new stuff
#1

I had feared that the WRC branded cars and track had become obsolete, but more sets have been announced. The "Rally Turini" set includes wireless controllers so sounds good for future expansion.

The WRC promoters provide live streaming via their "All Live" facilities and it looks like the cars may have that branding on them which again is a positive sign that this is getting serious. The "All Live" service is fabulous and on-board cameras reveal all. In Kris Meeke's words "There is no hiding place now". In the most recent round (Turkey), Ott Tanak had car issues and the cameras gave good views as he fiddled about in the cockpit trying to solve the problem. They have foot-well cameras showing the frantic footwork as the cars are pedalled along.

Those sets and cars are great for WRC fans and 1/43 is a good scale for rally stages - you can build a lot of road in a much smaller space than 1/32. Glad more sets have appeared, the ones at the UK Slot Car Festival looked good and were fun to drive.

Just gave my first WRC car a spin this evening and I like it! There seems a little bit more magnetc than Carrera the Go!!! cars on Go!!! track, but it is fun to drive. The livery is fab and the working headlights look great. Good value at £14.50 too.

My only problem is that when I swap the standard Go!!! powerbase for the GO Plus unit and Pit Stop Game, the pb signals a short as soon as I press the throttle. Braids looks fine - I assume it's something on the WRC car's circuit board that GO Plus doesn't like. I'll think about by-passing the board (and the lights) as I do want to see if the WRC cars will work with the GO Plus features and the SmartRace app... although I'm thinking the guide blade might not be deep enough to trip the sensors. I'll give it a try.

I just did a quick 9volt check on a Carrera Go! Aston Martin and a WRC Citroen C3 and found that they both draw about the same current - just under 50ma. (Citroen lights are still active)
The Go! car has those inductors feeding the motor so maybe that is providing some supprression that the Go!Plus powerbase likes? Similar-ish to the Ferrite-Man for SSD.

Interesting to see how you get on.

That's what is inside the WRC car. There is a small capacitor on the motor. It looked like one of the legs might have been shorting on the motor can, but removing it didn't make a difference. I also looked closely for any dodgy soldering on the PCB, but it looked okay-ish - and everything (car + lights) was working on the Go!!! powerbase, just not GO Plus.

When I removed the PCB and joined the wires direct from pick-ups to motor, the good news is that the car now works with GO Plus - and counts laps. The bad news is no headlights. And it's also a bit slow now - but that's almost certainly something I did and can be rectified...

Hello Andy,
If you really want the headlights you could simply feed them via a resistor. The circuit board looks quite simply that along with a diode for polarity safety. The feed esistor on the board is marked 561 which I believe means 560 ohms which seems appropriate. I see that the board has tabs for tail lights but none of the current WRC cars have such.
I'll do a trial of fitting a resistor tomorrow evening.

OK, I removed the resistor board and fed the lighting board via two 510 ohm resistors (one in positive and one in negative so effectively in series).
Ran the car on 10 volts for over 30 mins and no problems.
Not saying this will work with Go! Plus but worth trying if you want the headlights working. The tail lights do not have transparent lenses so did not bother fitting tail-lights.

The white thing is a piece of lead that I had fitted for running in an event.

I would like 1/43 except I do not see cars of early era but only modern rally. The scale may be popular if they made many cars to choose from like 1.32. I hear resin bodyshell available for 1/43 but not much detail.

Hello Ho Lee,
That is correct, 1:43 slot-cars representing older cars are generally not available.  Member LloydL on here can supply bodyshells for many interesting rally cars of yesteryear.  You would need to arrange for someone to assemble cars for you.
