Scorpius Controller Wireless Charging
#1

A few of the RC guys have been using Qi coils in the controllers to get wireless charging. The price of these has dropped dramatically and are now very affordable. My friend David Caille showed an install online for a controller.
The Qi coils are 25x25mm and can fit almost anywhere. Capacity is around 80% of AAA batteries. Price $10-15 online. Charging would required every 8 weeks of average use for 3 hours.

Here’s the coil which should arrive soon.

Here’s your charger which just arrived.

This was only ever going to work if we can get the batteries to fit.
The issue is most rechargeables are 1.2V. Whoever designed it like that should be minced. Anyway these days 1.5V rechargeable batteries are  75MaH available which is good because 1.2V won’t cut it.

Now the little board that comes with the coil….you would think that it would be set up so it can the batteries can still power something whilst being charged but no.
After thinking about I thought of a double pole double throw switch that could switch battery to coil PCB or controller PCB. If a 3 way switch is used an “off” option” becomes available as well.
Onto recap the 3 switch positions are:
1. On
2. Off
3. Charge

So first mount a DPDT switch.

Then mount the coil and its PCB.
Here I was able to pull the copper wire off the base plate to get an extra 16mm or so ti be able to mount it as shown. This was crucial and there was luck it fits so snuggly

Next from the switch solder 2 wires  to the coil PCB.

Next solder 2 switch wires to the controller PCB.

The switch looks pretty good.

Done.

Put it back together.

Ok so proper 1.5V Lithium Ion re-chargeables arrived. 60% on the market are 1.2.

As you can see the screen is now properly powered.
For now I’ll call it Wi Charge because that’s what fits on my controller screen.  Wavegreen
It will be around 25.00USD as an option.

Thanks Kev,

……..batteries can be charged 1200 times and will last 2-5 years.
Charging takes 3-4 hours max.
Battery life is 2-3 months  with regular use.

Ok I set the controller into transmission mode on Sat 11th October at midday and it’s just died on Wednesday 15th at 4pm
Exactly 100 hours like the previous system so it passes the test.

Now charging…….I’ll take a voltage reading first.
