Slot Rally GB in Worthing - 27 July 2024
#11

A few pictures from a great day at the Barn, where we had (I think) 22 racing in four groups of 5, plus the Rally HQ duo circulating separately...

Drivers could race up to 4 cars each, although some focused just on 2 or 3.

The stages ran smoothly, with a few minor glitches easily rectified.

One of the stars of the show was Jean's lap timer, which seems perfectly suited to slot rally stages...

There was an incredible variety of cars on show across the three classes - and many were captured for posterity on the start ramp...

Not all cars ran trouble-free, but drivers made sure they got back in the fray...

Our local WHO racers certainly enjoyed the opportunity to race alongside seasoned slot rally enthusiasts...

At the end of a most enjoyable day, Alan and Seb crunched the numbers and these were the podiums...

Classic - Winner John Underwood; 2nd & 3rd Phil Barry

80s / 90s - Winner Alan Birchmore; 2nd Phil Barry; 3rd Alan Wakely

Modern - Winner John Underwood; 2nd Seb Birchmore; 3rd Andy Player

Top Scalextric - Alan Birchmore; Top SCX - Andy Player

Full results will be published tomorrow, following the long journey for the Slot Rally HQ team back to South Wales.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along - some travelling long distances. Special thanks goes to Seb and Alan Birchmore for running the day, to Phil Barry for organising the series and to all the WHO racers who've worked hard on the set-up and tear-down over the past two days. Not bad for just a second slot rally event at the Barn. Thanks also goes to Marc and Ric for donating the Slot Car Magazines as prizes.

Here's a very brief flavour of the day...

I thought I'd taken more footage, but racing, marshalling and trouble-shooting took priority.

And we'll done Andy for bringing a National event to Worthing and highlighting us on the slot map again!

And sort of well done for your 3rd place in the Modern class...I don't think I could have driven my 208 any faster so I need to up my game!

Thanks Jeremy! Although my main role was just to say 'yes' to Phil B and then start recycling the stages from our 2021 proxy. This event was a great WHO team effort, including Jean & Mike with the new driver station / timers, you with Friston Forest (the longest and trickiest stage), Oli with most of Sea Lane, Pete for transportation, plus you, Pete, Ash, Jerome and Terry for putting in a long shift on Friday with set-up. And we couldn't have done it without everyone's participation at the first WHO Slot Rally club night in May.

Having not expected to last all day Saturday, I was extremely pleased with my four cars - although take away home advantage, a few regulars not making the trip and beginners' luck and I expect to get shuffled well down the order at Farnborough in October...

My two SCX cars did great - the Fiat 124 beating four SRC 914/6s to finish seventh in Classic, but was 3.38 seconds slower over the seven stages than the Suzuki Swift, which took top SCX honours and eleventh in the Modern class.

The two Ninco cars also did well. The Lancia 037 finished seventh in the 80s/90s class, but the Subaru was the pick of the quartet, finishing third in Modern - a mere 0.21 seconds off runner-up spot - and fifth overall.

Phil B caught the four cars on the Ford Ice Rink...

There's an SRC Peugeot in development that will probably take the place of the Lancia in October... We'll see.

And I was very happy with all the runs from all my cars. I could possibly have pushed my Delta a bit more on Jupp's Farm, but the front was bouncing a lot so took it slow...

My regular Classic entry since the TR7 Proxy in lockdown. Scalextric body on an Amarto 3DP chassis. Did a bit of fettling on it prior to the event and it ran well. Along with my little SRC 205 rocket ship. Very stable and nippy. Such fun to drive.

My latest purchase, the monster that is the SRC Delta S4. Still learning how to get the best out of it (and still have a long way to go when you watch someone like Gareth Jones drive theirs!) and my first ever white kit build, a Scaleauto 208. Super fast but just a little loose at the rear. Needs some new tyres I thnk.

I love puttering with gears
