WHO Racing F1 - December 2023
#1

This is our last HO Wednesday of the year and we'll be ending the evening crowning our 2023 F1 and Club champions.

We've brought back our AFX version of the Macau street circuit, last run in December 2018. It's a layout that is fairly even playing field for all the chassis in the F1 class...

As always, doors open at 6.30pm for practice, heats begin at 7 and we aim to finish well before 9.30pm. Entry is £3 (£2 for under-16s). We ask that racers younger than 14 bring a responsible adult with them. Club cars and controllers are available for no extra charge.

F1 Race Report

Sixteen of us gathered for the final HO evening of the year. Plenty of care was taken to build the Macau-inspired circuit...

Especially getting all those switchbacks from Moorish Hill to Black Sands nicely flat and stable...

Although there were opportunities for the SG+ round the harbour section, it looked like a well-sorted Mega-G+ would be the weapon of choice - although Duncan went well with his Tyco in practice.

Heats started at 7, with each driver getting two minutes on each lane and counting the best 3 towards their qualifying score. With good heat scores around the 15-16 lap mark, it looked like it would be a very close qualifying session...

Championship leader Pete was on top form - his Mega-G+ loving the technical sections on the layout. After everyone had completed 2 of their 4 heats, he led the way with a huge 37.05 laps, nearly four laps ahead of second-placed Andy and Kev in third - Kev just a twentieth of a lap behind. Isaac was top junior in fourth, half a lap ahead of Ollie in fifth. Daniel was sixth, Ozzie seventh - Ash, Matthew and Mike rounding out the top ten. Right at the back was Terry, who was really struggling with his Super-G.

The second round of heats was super exciting. Pete was untouchable out front, but there was a right old battle for the remaining places in the A Final. Ollie was getting better and better on the challenging track. Finishing with 16 laps on white and a huge 17 on blue, Ollie slotted in second, just ahead of Andy, who was racing on blue in the next heat. Pushing hard, Andy couldn't do enough to take back that second place - Ollie was guaranteed his first ever automatic A Final qualification...

Kev was in blue lane for the final heat of the night. A mechanical in red lane had dropped him down the order, but a good score in his last race would bring him right back into the mix for the A Final places. He needed 17 laps and some loose change to book his spot...

He banged in some awesome laps - consistently 6.6s and 6.7s - and despite a late wobble got through the line for a seventeenth time, stopping at the 45 marker as the power was cut. He'd beaten Andy to third spot by a tenth of a lap - what a dramatic end to the heats!

That was a very close session - second to fourteenth separated by just ten laps. Ash and Duncan finished with the same score, Ash a place higher because his best heat was 0.05 of a lap more than Duncan's!

Next up are the five finals...

The E Final was a full grid of four - Kevin in white, Tracy blue, Terry red and Rob yellow...

Both Terry and Kevin crashed on the first lap, handing Rob and Tracy a sizeable lead. Kevin and Terry would recover - thanks, in part, to Rob and Tracy having offs, but it was Rob in firm control after 5 laps, Kevin having moved up to second...

Terry finally found a rhythm that suited both his car and the track - and started to put in some consistent lap times without crashing. He moved up from last place, to third and then took second from Rob on lap 6 and the lead from Kevin on lap 7. More crashes from Rob and Kevin then put Tracy in second and on the same lap as Terry. It really was anyone's race. However, Terry managed to keep it clean to the chequered flag and it was Tracy who faltered on the final lap - the other way round and it would have been Tracy stepping up. Rob came in third, just a fraction behind Tracy - and Kevin was less than half a lap back. A close race to get us started...

Terry stepped up to white lane in the D Final. Although the middle two lanes were most people's favourites, the gutters had worked well for some. Matthew qualifying top of the D and choosing yellow, Mike and Ozzy happy to snap up blue and red...

Matthew looked good in yellow, blasting off the line and leading the opening laps as Terry and Mike both crashed on lap one. Terry got no further than that first lap, his car unable to continue...

Mike, however, did recover and took the lead when Matthew binned it on lap four.  Both banged in some great laps, but Mike's car was quicker, pulling out a half lap lead that he held through to the chequered flag. Behind them, Ozzie drove well, but three offs dropped him two laps back.

Mike had white in the C Final, Gary following the unexpected trend and picking yellow...

Gary led through the line at the end of the first lap, but an off dropped him behind Ash and Mike, with Duncan already having been in the scenery with his Tyco. What followed was a heart-in-mouth chase for 8 laps - Ash out front and Mike hunting him down...

A couple of super-quick laps put Mike's car alongside the leader, the pressure forcing Ash into an error. Trying hard to recover lost ground, Ash crashed again - surely that was game over? Mike held his nerve and won by just over a lap - a double step-up and a rare clean run from lights to flag...

Behind, Ash had given it a good go, finishing a quarter of a lap ahead of Duncan. Gary had two lengthy offs, making him rue that choice of yellow lane!

Mike now found himself in the B Final, alongside Daniel, Isaac and Andy...

This was a scrappy race with the deserved winner being robbed on the line. Top qualifier Andy had chosen blue lane and had a healthy lead after the first lap. That fell apart when he crashed on lap two, but swift marshalling meant only three seconds - or about half a lap - was lost. Isaac was out front, miles ahead of Mike and Daniel, who'd both crashed early. The gap from Isaac to Andy was nearly a lap, with the leader banging in a succession of error-free laps...

That pattern continued - Isaac holding his lead, Andy not making much of an impact and the other two falling further behind. But then, with about 7 laps to go, Isaac started to slow and Andy sped up - taking nearly a second a lap out of the lead. The post-race chat from Isaac was that he was trying to stay on and control the lead, but his car also seemed to be tightening up. The final time through the line and Andy had the lead...

Much to Andy surprise and Isaac's disappointment, that was the result - a win by 0.05 of a lap. Apart from the final few laps, it wasn't one of Andy's better races and with a clean run, Isaac had really deserved the win and the step up... At least he had bagged enough points to secure the Junior F1 title. Behind, Mike just pipped Daniel in the battle of the McCanns.

That left Andy in white for the A Final, up against Pete in red, Ollie in blue and Kev choosing that yellow lane...

It was an absolutely cracking start to the race - Ollie throwing everything at pole-sitter and F1 champion-elect Pete. Pete led first two laps, Ollie ahead the third and fourth time round. Pete edged in front again by the smallest of margins - and then the two of them came together at Teddy Yip corner on lap 6. Pete was re-slotted almost immediately, but Ollie dropped to the floor, losing nearly 13 seconds with the crash and then a slow recovery lap - pretty much two laps.

Pete was off again two laps later, but again it was a quick one and he retained the lead - just ahead of Andy. More crashes might have put Andy in with a shout of victory, but Pete and Ollie's cars were much quicker. They all kept it clean on the run-in, Pete winning by nearly three-quarters of a lap, Andy second and Ollie third, a further half lap in arrears. Kev had a few offs in yellow and was almost two laps behind Pete at the end...

A suitably exciting A Final to end the 2023 HO season - and two delighted medal winners took their places in front of the Christmas tree...

Here are all the stats from this month's finals...

Four champions were decided - and presented with trophies - on the night, plus two more to declare after some post-race number-crunching. We'll have those later!

WHO Champions 2023

Pete only needed to finish ahead of Terry to retain his Formula One title - and that he did! Isaac had a healthy lead over Ollie for the Junior F1 championship going into the final race - so his fifth place overall was enough, despite Ollie's magnificent performance. Huge congrats to Pete and Isaac, our 2023 Formula One champions...

The WHO club championship was Terry's before the start of Wednesday's action - a consistent attendance and four race wins putting him exactly 100 points ahead of Pete, who missed two rounds. Ollie also attended all eleven rounds this year and claimed his first junior championship in his first full season - beating last year's junior champion Isaac by 73 points. There's no bigger trophy than the Club Championship, so bravo to Terry and to Ollie!

Going on in the background this year has been a fine battle between Ollie and Rob for the 2023 Rookie of the Year title. Both attended all eleven rounds, dad outscoring son on six occasions and winning the title by just a single point! Ollie will be entered into the WHO Hall of Fame as the 2023 Junior Rookie of the Year...

With a bit of luck, we'll have a pair of trophies and a photoshoot for our rookie champions in January. The 2024 Rookie of the Year competition is open to any racer who has scored points in three or less HO races prior to the start of the season - so everyone apart from Ollie, Rob and Tracy will be back in the mix to claim the trophy in 12 months time.

That means our 2023 HO champions are confirmed as...
