WHO Racing Nascar - November 2023
#1

We're back at the Barn on Wednesday for our 2023 HO Nascar championship decider. Doors open at 6.30pm for practice, heats start at 7 and we aim to finish the finals - including the Gen6 Cup championship shoot-out - by 9.30pm. At our November event, we also hold a brief, 5-minute Annual General Meeting to present the following year's schedule and a financial report. All the details of our 2024 season are here.

We'll be using a brand-new oval layout this month, inspired by the original Daytona Beach track, but not including any sand or salt water...

Those long straights are going to make the tight turn into the South Bend rather interesting! Should make an exciting evening though.

It looks like a two-way battle for Nascar honours - Oliver leading Terry by 50 points and the points for the top places being 160-130-110-90-80-70...

The Gen6 Cup is run for Tomy Mega-G+ cars fitted with Gen6 Nascar bodies. The championship is decided in a 2-minute, 4-car shoot-out at the end of the night - the competitors qualifying via a Gen6 race win during the season and any empty spots filled by points positions in the Gen6 table...

Kev and Ash are qualified with wins, but Keith and Deborah are rumoured to be running Gen6 for this final round and have a decent chance of grabbing one automatic spot in the championship shoot-out. We shall see!

Race Report

Seventeen of us ventured to the Barn as Storm Ciarán approached the south coast. We welcomed Kevin and Ozzy for their first taste of HO club racing - and we welcomed back Darren, Gareth and Dylan for the first time since 2020. Three Nascar championships were up for grabs, but with no Walkers and no McCanns on the grid, Terry only had to finish eighth to overhaul Oliver and win the big trophy. It was much closer for the junior title - Ollie leading Isaac by just one point. And in Gen6, anything could happen... Kev and Ash were locked into the winner-takes-all championship shoot-out, with tonight's Gen6 winner also certain to qualify and Rob looking safe for the fourth spot on points.

As advertised, the 2023 WHO AGM lasted no more than 5 minutes, with everything you need to know in this thread. There was a big round of applause for everyone who has kept the club racing this year, after the three tricky years during the pandemic. And then it was on to the racing...

Daytona Beach proved exciting. The tight entry to the South Bend certainly made the inside yellow lane tricky, but the unusual geometry of the North Bend required equally precise braking. Marshals at both ends of the track were kept busy...

Despite their rustiness, both Darren and Gareth were on top form in the opening heats. Andy wasn't far behind and Terry looked on course for the B final qualification that would guarantee him the Nascar championship. Debutants Ozzy and Kevin were quickly learning the ropes driving the club cars, given plenty of advice and assistance by more experienced racers...

The second pair of heats saw Terry jump up the order with a huge 41.7 lap score in blue. Andy faltered and the championship was Terry's - qualifying third behind Darren and Gareth. Deborah was top Gen6 runner, but still had work to do to clinch a shoot-out spot. Ollie out-qualified Isaac and Ozzy finish above Kevin in the battle of the first-timers...

So good to be back at The Barn. Really weird evocative triggers that made me smile such as the Gentlemen Please Wash Your Hands sign in the loo and the bench thing I've always used as a pit area. Good times!

Finals - Part 1

We started the second part of the evening with Ozzy and Kevin lining up in the F final...

Both had navigated their first night learning-curve rather well in the heats, but Ozzy handed Kevin a half-lap head-start when the blue club car stalled on the line. The misfortune definitely stirred up Ozzy as he came back at an impressive pace, passing Kevin just before the start of third lap...

Kevin was keeping things clean in the outside lane, hoping Ozzy's faster pace would be a recipe for disaster. The blue car did have a couple of excursions off track, but stayed in the lead. Sadly for Kevin, his one crash of the final was a big one - body and axle requiring lengthy attention. That gave Ozzy the win by a rather flattering seven laps...

Ozzy moved from the favoured blue lane to the tricky inside yellow lane for the E Final...

He lined up against Dylan and Isaac's Super-Gs and Kevin's Mega-G+ in a fierce battle for the step-up. Isaac and Dylan were particularly keen, as it would give them a crack at Ollie for the Junior medal - and Isaac a chance of the Junior Nascar title. It was Dylan who led the first lap, Kevin having a big crash which wrecked his race. Dylan crashed on lap two, leaving Ozzy just ahead of Isaac...

A brilliant two-way battle unfolded - Ozzy keeping the yellow club car just ahead of Isaac's Super-G in blue lane. The gap ebbed and flowed and everyone was transfixed - could Ozzy hang on to the end? Is was getting very close, but it was a crash for Ozzy that let Isaac through with about twenty-five seconds to go. Ozzy came back with some fast laps, closing the gap down again to the smallest of margins. In a dramatic final lap, Isaac eased off to negotiate a mêlée of marshals and crashed cars. In that chaos, the race ended - Ozzy had slipped through and won by a couple of feet!

After that exhilarating win, Ozzy was back in yellow lane for the D Final...

He was one of three Mega-G+ drivers who could step-up to challenge Keith and Deborah for the Gen6 Cup win. It was a scrappy start - Rob delayed on lap one and then Ozzy having a big smash on lap two, losing four laps. He'd have an even more costly crash a few laps latter, ruining his chances. Rob recovered and took second from Ollie. Meanwhile, Ash was a class apart, keeping things clean in white lane - just one late off giving Rob a brief sniff of victory. In the end, Ash won by over a lap, Ollie was third and Ozzy fourth...

The C Final was a bit of a classic, featuring a three-way battle for the Gen6 Cup win plus Duncan's Life Like...

Tension was high amongst the Mega-G+ runners, Deborah having chosen yellow lane and leading the opening laps. Duncan squeezed ahead on lap 3, but it was still incredibly close between all four runners. Keith was the first to crash - on lap 16 - but he came back strong, taking third when Ash had an off on lap 20. Those would be the only two crashes of the race...

Duncan's Life Like had the better of the Mega-G+ cars on pace - consistently lapping in the low to mid 3 seconds in the outside white lane. Over in yellow, Deborah was banging in 3.4s lap after lap - Keith taking a few hundredths and the occasional tenth out of her Gen6 lead. One mistake and Keith would be through and into the Gen6 shoot-out. In the end, Keith fell short by exactly half a lap. Duncan was absolutely delighted with his win - by a margin of two laps...

Duncan's reward was yellow in the B Final...

He got a great start - but so did everyone else... Andy led Duncan, Matthew and Pete in the early stages. Duncan was pushing a little too hard - two offs dropping him back as Andy and Matthew battled side-by-side in blue and red lanes. It was great to watch as they both set sub-3 second times...

Matthew's challenge started to crumble on lap 11, when a brief off was followed by four more in quick succession. However, Andy couldn't relax as Pete was not far behind and setting some very consistent times in white lane. Half way in and Andy found a perfect rhythm, his lap times dropped and he added big chunks to his lead over Pete each lap. By the end, the two were separated by four laps, Duncan recovering to a fine third place, just a lap behind Pete...

There was no championship pressures in the A Final - Terry had wrapped up the Nascar title and the other three were just in it for a one-off win...

That was lucky for Terry, because he didn't finish the first lap - a big off at the North Bend wrecking body, axle and gears. The ensuing marshalling mayhem meant race leader Darren was taken out on lap two and three, dropping him back nearly two laps. That left Gareth and Andy running neck-and-neck in red and yellow lanes...

It was a brilliant opening phase of the race, the two WHO veterans swapping the lead lap after lap until Gareth crashed out on lap 14. That gave Andy a little breathing space - although Gareth came back strong and Darren was chipping away at least few hundredths of a second a lap, albeit still more than a lap adrift. It was still anyone's race...

A scrappy couple of laps for Gareth with 30 seconds to go let Darren through into second and on the same lap as the leader. Andy focussed on the precision rhythm that yellow lane demanded, keeping up his pace and managed the gap - exactly half a lap when the chequered flag fell. It was a textbook yellow lane Nascar win! Congrats to our medal winners Ollie and Andy...

That wasn't the end of the night's action by any means, but here are all the stats from the finals...

Those 13 laps of side by side racing was so much fun. It really reminded me of how much of a thrill slot car racing can be. Swiftly followed by the agony of the constant crashing once I lost the rhythm. Still had so much fun though and Andy was a very worthy winner.

Check out Darren and I setting identical laptimes. That's mad!

Gen6 Cup Championship Shoot-Out

Our Gen6 Cup subclass for AFX Mega-G+ cars fitted with a Gen6 body has its own winner-takes-all shoot-out at the final race of our November meeting. It's a format devised by Keith and Andy back in 2015 that pays homage to the Nascar Playoffs and 'Championship 4' race - which takes place this Sunday in Phoenix. WHO racers qualify for the shoot-out by either winning a Gen6 race or finishing high up in the Gen6 points table. With Deborah's win, this was the line-up...

These were the four cars...

And these the four drivers, one of them just two minutes away from championship glory...

Top seeds Kev and Ash had gone for the outer two lanes, Deborah being brave and choosing yellow. Rob was happy with red... The first lap saw Deborah, Ash and Kev glued together in close formation, Rob just hanging back. The adrenaline boost of a championship showdown proved a bit too much - Ash crashed on lap 2, Kev on laps 3 and 4. That left Deborah out front and Rob keeping watch a few yards back...

Deborah was focused on that tricky inside lane and driving it beautifully. Each lap saw another tenth of a second or more added to her lead over Rob in red lane. Yet all Rob needed was for Deborah to make an error - or get caught up in someone else's crash - and he could grab the win. But when the gap went out to a lap - and then two laps - Rob needed more. And Deborah wasn't making any mistakes!

With just one Nascar appearance this year, Deborah brushed off the cobwebs and executed a magnificent smash-and-grab for the Gen6 Cup! Rob was a fine second place, getting through with no offs - Ash was third and pole-man Kev fourth. Championship dreams were shattered...

That gave us the final piece of the 2023 WHO Nascar Championship jigsaw - congrats to Deborah, Ollie and Terry...

And here are those all-important Nascar championship tables...

Next month is the final HO race of the year - we'll be racing F1 on a layout  inspired by the Macao street circuit. There'll be a whole raft of champions crowned, including our 2023 WHO Club Champion. Terry looks like he's in pole position for that one...

A very big thank you to everyone who came along and made Wednesday evening another cracking three hours at the Barn. Special thanks for to the set-up crew, the race control team and to those who braved the storm to stay and pack away. Keith is coming up with four Nascar layouts for 2024 - we'll post them when we have them.
