Maybe you could elaborate on your thoughts there, Kevan?

In what way? there must be some Slot forums that didn't survive, much like RC forums and no doubt countless other special interest forums. Forums are full of old folk, I'd love to know the percentage of under 20's that are regulars on the most popular English speaking Slot forums...not many no doubt.

In the way that you said.... what slotcar forums cater for which different customers?

I can think of one obvious one.

Notice I didn’t say fora?

I don't think two forums feels the same, consequently you see a lot of the same regulars on a lot of them (like myself) and some regulars you only ever see on one forum.  I can only presume that's because each forum caters to different types of people.

Mostly I agree except for the last point.
I dont think people choose a forum because they are a type. I think it is perhaps more to do with the spheres or genres of the hobby that are catered for in that hobby but....they nearly all cater for all spheres or genres!!!

My first thought was Slotblog which is predominantly 1/24 focused.

Considering the size of our hobby, and the impact of facebook, we should probably be thankful that we still have a few decent forum options available.

Vive la difference, and good luck to all of them. But it's always the members that make the difference.

I doubt I'll ever properly get into facebook, and personally I see forums as being far better.

But I also love being able to set up the other stuff we do here, the things that aren't about likes, or discussion, but just getting fascinated by something, learning about it, and hopefully finding a good way to present it. Even if facebook or forums didn't exist, I think I'd still be doing some of the historical stuff, I'd still be doing the track plans, and I have to say that when Brian came up with the Grand Prix photos, or the BRM photos that made my week. Similarly when Hub sent me some scans for the library, or Richard, or any number of other people that have chipped in and helped, that made me happy. I've always wanted to set up some permanent content to add to the ephemeral content of facebook, and the proper community discussion that we get on forums.

On another point, we have been really lucky so far, because moderating here has been an absolute pleasure, compared to other forums I've "worked" on. By which I mean that apart from banning spammers, we've barely had to do anything. Which brings me back to the point that it's always the members that make the difference, so thank you to everybody, it is appreciated. Thumbup

Yes, but I'd say any forum is led by it's members.

I once read a post on our facebook group saying "I know you guys aren't interested in tracks, but ....."

Well bloomin eck, we certainly are interested, but perhaps new tracks don't come along that often, and maybe that makes people think we're not interested, because they're outnumbered 100 to 1 by photos of new cars, or whatever.

But as you said, most forums try to cater for everybody, the hobby is too small not to do that. But every forum will have it's own character, perhaps regional focus, and areas of interest, created mostly by the members.

I thought about it.

But the message I got on Instagram suggested that there was a commercial infringement and I wasn't posting our own work, which made me wonder if the dreaded algorithms had mistaken your Ferrari for a real Ferrari. I wasn't about to start re-doing the main header image, so I just thought "sod it".
