Worthing Digital Bonus Saturday - 12 August 2023
#1

We squeezed a bonus Saturday into the schedule this month. The morning was some summer fun - a rather eclectic Club Car Rotation - followed by an afternoon of testing for the autumn Saturdays. That starts with the Goodwood Revival Saturday on 23 September, the Birkett Relay day on 14 October and a pair of Tin Top Saturdays on 18 November and 16 December.

Simon's new track design - which he named O'Connor - was a whopper...

It looked great set up in the Barn and proved a wonderful driving circuit and excellent for overtaking...

We welcomed Stuart and Bobby for their first visit to the Barn. Stuart drove a couple of rotation races before they had to head off - Bobby is still quite young for SCalextric digital at just two years old!

The rotation format has been tweaked for the 2-minute races, making it a hectic hour an a half of racing. At the end of the session, it was exceedingly close...

But Rob managed a terrific six scores to finish a lap clear of the pack. Bravo to Rob - and to Ollie for the junior honours...

Rob, Ollie, Kev and Isaac left at lunchtime, but we were joined by Jeremy - giving us ten for the test sessions. That was after a quick dash to the chippy and a typical 2023 summer downpour!

The afternoon started with six 15 minute test sessions - each driver getting 45 minutes to run their cars on a full-size WHO track and make necessary tweaks ahead of the autumn Saturdays. It was a really useful experiment and one we will probably repeat each year as an extra Wednesday evening in August.

However, after those sessions, we decided it was time to continue the testing in race conditions - starting with some Richmond Trophy 1950s front-engined F1 cars...

In true period fashion, Jeremy's car failed to make it to the line and Dean's LED wasn't triggering laps, but the three functioning cars served up a magnificent race...

Next up were three Sussex Trophy 1950s World Championship Sportscars...

There will be more on the grid in the autumn - we aim to squeeze a quick race into the September Saturday, but six of these cars will feature as one hour of the Birkett Relay in October. The two Mercs and D-Type did give us a fun race to watch...

So a few more people could race, next up we had six BTCC cars - a Cortina, Sierra and four modern racers...

And then six Goodwood St Mary's Trophy tin tops...

The final action of the day was a race for any Goodwood Revival car - with the exception of the Chaparral. It was a nice mix - although a lot of Whitsun Trophy cars! Two 15-minute qualifying heats allowed for a good rhythm... and then a slightly more frantic 10-minutes for the top three from each heat...

And that was it... A very useful day to get some rarely raced cars sorted and certainly upped the enthusiasm for the Goodwood Revival Saturday next month.

If you're interested in joining us for our Revival meeting, all the formats and detailed car regs are in the 2023 WHO Digital Guide pdf, available as a download from the WHO website: http://www.whoracing.org.uk/who_digital.html

At our WHO Goodwood Revival Saturday we race models of cars from the 1948-1966 era, when the Goodwood racing circuit in West Sussex held regular national and international race meetings. The aim of the day is to recreate the atmosphere of the Goodwood Revival historic racing festival that has been held since 1998. Our racing uses the Scalextric Sport Digital system and RCS64. Cars will be run without traction magnets and may be modern ready-to-run models, kits or scratch-builds with plastic chassis. We race on a layout inspired by the Goodwood Motor Circuit and featuring a single-lane chicane...

This is a summary of our current Goodwood Revival classes, but the full car regs in the pdf should be consulted if you are preparing a car to race.

  • Club Car Rotation: Six race-prepared Goodwood Revival club cars race for two minutes by each driver. The total laps completed will count towards the final result.
  • St Mary’s Trophy (Parts I & II): A two-part pairs race (one ten-minute heat per driver) for 4-seat, hard top saloon cars 1948-1966. The aggregate of the two drivers’ scores count towards the final result. RTR models by Scalextric, Carrera and Revell with standard S-Can motors or FF as fitted. Also George Turner kits (GTM chassis) or other bodies with PCS32 chassis. Wheel & tyre width: Minimum 5mm, maximum 10mm.

  • Whitsun Trophy: An individual race for Sports Prototype and Can-Am cars to 1966, including various RTR models and George Turner kits. Maximum tyre width 10mm. Slot.it and Policar models are now eligible for the Whitsun Trophy, but must be run as with a built kit - using a Scalextric or PSR AC6 motor and Scalextric gear ratios.
  • Kinrara Trophy: A 45-minute team race for 1959-64 closed-cockpit GT cars. Must have headlights fitted and use a Scalextric or PSR AC6 S-can motor. A 3D-printed chassis with Slot.it pod (inline or Sidewinder) may be used, or suitable George Turner cars with resin chassis. Wheels & tyres: minimum diameter 19mm, minimum width 5mm, maximum width 7.5mm.
  • RAC TT Celebration: A pairs race (with driver change) for 1959-64 closed-cockpit GT cars featuring front-motored RTR models by Scalextric, Revell and Fly, using original wheels only. To run in October 2023 as the Birkett Relay warm-up race. A reserve class for September.
  • Sussex Trophy: A 45-minute team race for 1950-59 World Championship sports cars and production sports racing cars featuring kits by George Turner, Racing Replicas, OCAR etc using a Scalextric or PSR S-can motor. A limited number of RTR models are also included as options. Wheels & tyres: minimum diameter 19mm (front) 21mm (rear), minimum width 5mm, maximum width 7.5mm. Maximum overall width of car 57mm.
