Belgian Kyalami - my Revell Track build
#61

Here is my humble attempt at 2 trees. (the others are store bought)

They are not easy to do.  I now comprehend why you do not use acrylic paint to cover the skeleton including the steelwool - it is WAY too heavy and does not shake out/drip dry easily. And I mixed the paint at a 60/40 water  to paint thin ness. As Hub says - practice does make perfect. I will add 'foliage' to the trees when I get all my stocks sitting with my daughter at the moment. I have wrong colours here at the moment. Nowhere near Hubs class yet  Sun

Anthony, you made a fine base.

If you want to improve your trees, you must first wait for them to dry.
Then you can stretch the steel wool a little in every direction, so that more volume is created.
Use a small screwdriver or a pair of tweezers.

Adding some small stretched dots of steel wool will increase the volume even more.
Use some spray glue and sprinkle the mixture of grits/foliage over the tree.
Shake the tree at the stem and leave it as it is. Don't touch the steelwool again!
I hope this will help you to get more volume into your treetops.

Hub - I have added foliage, but then stopped as I need the correct colours (currently all my purchases sitting with my daughter in the UK - collecting in Nov :) )

In the interim I have been adding more to the base - plaster bandage laid on the board. And with colours on the track.
Initially bought a tin of grey but it was far too light.

As can be seen here

I then bought some more paint (after failing to darken my original grey purchase) with a tin of paint called 'Stone'. It is a floor paint, so is not gloss smooth when painted on.
This is the update:

Looks good so this will be the solution for the whole track.

The laid base near the controllers:

This is how it looks at the moment:

I have gone quiet on this - and the reason is we are moving. So now the brainstorming is how to move the track without destroying it.  This will happen mid Jan and I will photograph and detail our rationale on how we moved it (I say we as I have a friend with trailer and we will see what works :) ) in case it interests anyone else .

Hi Anthony,

Perhaps a fresh start with all the useful components of your track might be the better and easier way to go, because your track isn't finished yet.
In this way you give yourself a second chance to improve.

I have now built several scenic tracks and it strikes me that I can improve things every time.
Good luck with your move and your decision.

HAH - an update - yes the track will be moved in one piece - the people doing our move will move it for us prior to main move - 4 sturdy sets of hands to lift and shift in a large truck - fortunately there is easy access both here and at our new place.

I am really pleased...... it will also lengthen in its new home Yes

In glad your moving it in one go, so much work has gone into to break it up.
Really enjoying this build.

Thanks Tibs - looking forward to carrying on

Thought I would share this video I found of the 1970 9 hour. Some wonderful panoramic shots of the track, the cars, just bring back massive memories for me. I guess that is what slot racing is all about for me.

It is a short video and there is also one for 1971. Hope you enjoy

It is completely understandable how that would bring back memories, why did we ever have to evolve to modern race tracks. Great footage, I didn't have any sound my end that would of topped it off. Thumbup
