The Scalextric Ultimate Guide: Edition 9 Series by Adrian Norman
#1

Adrian Norman has just announced the publication of the first two volumes of his new project - the ultimate Scalextric Ultimate Guide. It's the ninth edition of the book first written by Roger Gillham. Adrian has been talking for a while about how he might utilise modern publishing techniques to create a bigger and better guide that can be updated more easily. And this is it.

Each of the ten volumes - spelling S-C-A-L-E-X-T-R-I-C across their spines - will be published as  print-on-demand titles. Adrian has chosen the Lulu platform to achieve this. With between 250 and 350 pages, each volume will be made available in choice of three formats...
  • PB – standard colour printing in paperback
  • HB – standard colour printing in hardback
  • DL – rich photographic-quality paper in deluxe hardback
Beginning late April 2021, volumes 1 and 2 will be available and then each remaining volume will be released monthly, but not necessarily in numerical order. The books can be purchased online via Lulu or at UK slot car shows swapmeets where they can be purchased from Adrian and taken away on the day.

Without further ado, this is the Scalextric - the Ultimate Guide Edition 9...

Available any day from Lulu is the next instalment of Adrian's masterpiece...

Volume 5 covers all the catalogues, service sheets, track plans, decals, promotional items, merchandising, T-shirts, mugs, pens, point of sale materials, signs, leaflets etc... Basically, anything that has been printed by Scalextric. The 'Did You Know' panels highlight the usual eye openers such as the eleven catalogues produced between 1997 and 2003. Useful if you have one for each of the seven years, but didn't realise that there are another four to seek out.

I guess that also means we're halfway through the series...

Each volume is available in paperback (PB), hardback (HB) and deluxe (DL) for the glossy 'ultimate' version. They are waiting for you at Lulu here.

Volume 6  - Competitions, Events & Special Models - is out today. This is mostly new material and has over 330 pages covering official Scalextric competitions - from the launch of Scalextric right through to the current day, including national and World Championships - plus events such as Goodwood, Brooklands and the Guinness Book of Records.

Many events have special commemorative cars produced - and these are included in this volume, along with some cars that were never released. There are also cars with liveries never seen before and pre-production tests such as 'glow in the dark' paint test and other paint decoration trials. The 'Code 3' cars created by UK Slot Festival, SLN and others are all listed here too.

Thank to Adrian for making these sample pages available to give a flavour of the latest volume...

All six of the volumes published so far are available from print-on-demand publisher Lulu. They are available in paperback (PB), hardback (HB) and deluxe (DL) for the glossy version. They are waiting for you at Lulu here.

Volume 7: Track & Trackside Accessories was published just before Christmas. This volume contains all the buildings and accessories made by - and for - Scalextric. Here are some images of the pages in the book to give you a taster...

As usual, this volume is available in paperback (PB), hardback (HB) and deluxe (DL) formats. They are all available from on-demand printer Lulu here.

Adrian announced yesterday that the final three volumes will be published next week...
Quote:That will mean that the entire 10 Volume series will then be completed after a good five years of getting the information together, collating it and (just as I thought a section was complete) adding, amending, deleting and updating newly discovered information.

It's been quite a journey and would not have been possible without the help of some very good friends who have managed to put up with my never-ending questions and requests. Thank you to you all - your assistance has been duly recognised in the introductory pages of all ten volumes.

Big thanks also to Richard Winter, a master of proof-reading, and to Hornby Hobbies for their support and approval.

OK, back to work now! I've got to create the final publishing files and cover graphics for Volumes 8, 9 and 10.

Huge congratulations to Adrian - this is a huge achievement. Those ten volumes are a must for any serious collector of Scalextric - or anyone passionate about the history of the brand.
