Bear in mind there's a few things at play here and the reason I prefer contactless controllers:
  • Friction 
  • Dust/dirt/oil 
  • Electrical arcing 
  • Wear on both contact and board 
  • Force of the contact on the board due to the wiper arm being bent too much

I always thought that it was the "Gunk Monster". I could be wrong.  Tease
