- Scalextric Superstox (expert required) - Scuderia_Turini - 1st-Oct-26

Hello, I am hoping some-one has in-depth, hands-on knowledge of the Superstox cars from the 80s.
My query concerns removal and refitting the guide assembly. I have a broken chassis that has a guide in place and a good chassis with no guide in place but cannot work out how to remove the guide and transfer it.
I have managed remove and replace the braid so that aspect is not a problem.
If you can explain the difference between a Type 1 guide and the Type 2 that would be useful but I am pretty sure the donor chassis is a Type 1.

Leo, I put this through Google search for information on the brand, then put that information through Google Gemini AI and got this information below.

The classic 1980s Scalextric Superstox (such as the C281/C282 models) features a notorious steering and guide assembly. Unlike standard slot cars where the guide blade pops out on a single post, the Superstox uses a spring-loaded steering linkage and brass wipers.

Type 1 vs. Type 2 Superstox Assemblies
Scalextric released two versions of the Superstox chassis and guide system during its production run, differences are below

Removal & Refitting Instructions (Type 1 Guide Assembly)
Fragile Vintage Plastics
Old 1980s plastic chassis are brittle. Work on a flat, clean surface so small springs and clips do not fly off during disassembly.

To step through removing the donor guide assembly and reinstalling it into your good chassis:
1. Expose the Top of the Front Axle Assembly:

Tools: Small Flathead Screwdriver / Tweezers.
  1. Remove the bodyshell from the chassis by releasing the mounting screws/clips.
  2. Flip the chassis over so you are looking at the upper side of the front steering bay.
  3. Carefully unhook the copper or braided motor leads from the brass wiper contacts on the top of the guide plate.
  4. Verification: The top of the guide post, return spring, and small retaining clip/washer should now be fully exposed.
2. Release the Guide Retaining Clip:
Caution: Spring under tension.
  1. Locate the small metal E-clip (or push-on star washer) seated on the top of the central guide pivot shaft.
  2. Place your thumb gently over the top of the assembly to catch any loose parts.
  3. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry the clip sideways off the groove in the central shaft.
  4. Verification: The top clip should slide free, releasing tension on the assembly.
3. Remove the Centering Spring & Plate:
Take photos before removal.
  1. Carefully lift off the small coil return spring (or wire centering spring) from the top stem.
  2. Slide the guide plate downwards, pulling it out from the underside of the chassis floor along with its brass wiper plates.
  3. Clean off any old grease or track grime from the pivot post and brass contacts using isopropyl alcohol.
  4. Verification: The guide assembly should now be completely separated from the broken donor chassis.

4. Refit Assembly into the Good Chassis:Reassembly.
  1. Align the donor guide stem through the underside guide opening on your good chassis.
  2. Seat the brass contact wipers into their designated channels on the top side of the guide plate.
  3. Slide the return centering spring back over the top pivot post.
  4. Compress the spring slightly and re-seat the metal retaining clip into the groove on the top shaft using needle-nose pliers until it clicks into place.
  5. Reattach the motor lead connectors to the brass wiper plates.
  6. Verification: Turn the guide blade by hand left and right. It should snap smoothly back to the center position under spring pressure.

Hello Johnno,
Do these instructions tie in with your car?
Mine do not have any springs involved. The guides allow full rotation like a drift car so self-centering is not appropriate.
