Digital box sets outselling analogue? - ScorpiusWireless - 15th-Sep-25

I had to laugh. I seen elsewhere on the internet a topic “Why is digital such a hard sell?” as if it is.

I got on the phone immediately with my mate and biggest slot shop in Australia, Mr Slotcar, and and asked him what did he sell more of? Analogue or Digital box sets? He answered digital before I had even finished asking the question. I then asked another retailer. Same answer.

So in less than 20 years digital is the biggest selling platform out of the two. I must say that makes me very happy.

So perhaps the question could be “Why are analogue sales declining?”.

I know why.

That may be true for box sets, plastic track, and/or first time buyers.

However, I know some people that have well over 1,200 slot cars in their collection. None are digital. They only race on multi-lane routed tracks.

People like what they like. There's no such thing as a wrong favourite colour. Everyone loves blue, yes?  Thumbup

There will always be both technologies. Both will grow, and get better with time.

Maybe the question should be asked "Do you sell more analogue, or digital cars these days?". There's more money in the individual car market than in sets.

But, everything is prone to change.

If my area is typical of the US, it could be because the only 1/32 box sets I’ve seen for sale in brick and mortar stores are Carrera digital.

I think that’s part of Carreras success. Not only good products but great distribution.
The fact the retailer chose digital also tells me something.

I used to have 320 cars but I still only raced the same 20 favourites.

A lot of people buy an analogue car from supplier A and then a car decoder from supplier B. So what msg look like an analogue car becomes digital.

First impressions count. If the first experience of digital is one that includes glitches and thumb controllers etc then they aren’t likely to return. That’s a hard sell.

I once hosted 12 analogue guys to a Scorpius race and I asked them score out of ten and would they return. They all said 10/10 and they all said they would come again if invited.
This was a timber track with NSR cars. That wasn’t hard sell.
