Rallly1 - what is your opinion? - StuBeeDoo - 24th-Nov-24

So it's now official that Rally1 is dropping hybrid technology certainly for 2025 and 2026.  Personally, I think that the teams have been held to ransom by Compact Dynamics charging them €50000 every time they perform a reset.  To me, this is just another reason why "spec." this and that in motorsport is flawed.  Supplier monopolies, whether it be for engines, transmissions, tyres, whatever, isn't good for progress.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again........  Bring back Group A.  Group B lite sorry - Rally1, hasn't been the success FIA wanted it to be in terms of getting more manufacturers on-board, in fact there's a possibility that very soon they will be down to one-and-a-half (Toyota and M-Sport/Ford).  Rally1 cars just aren't relatable - spec. spaceframe chassis with lookalike bodywork, 4-pot engines rather than production 3-pot.

Another thing......  Has anyone here got their head around FIA's latest points system?  I certainly haven't.

At least Thierry Neuville has finally won the championship (more by luck than judgment......).  He was in danger of becoming another Mikko Hirvonen - regularly a close(ish) runner-up, but never quite "the man".

Discuss...........

I'd be more than happy with Rally2 cars, drop the top class and return to traditional end-of-rally points. The competition in WRC2 is fabulous - big fields, more manufacturers, a mix of upcoming and ex-WRC drivers. I'd like to see what happened if the works teams and top drivers were thrown into the mix.

In my opinion you are both right.
Group A and Kitcars should have been the top level of rallysport.
These cars already provided enough spectacle. I still remember how spectacular Jean Ragnotti was with his Clio.

To be fair, I think the first generation world rally cars (ie up to and including 2002) were OK.  Seven manufacturer teams in 2002, but after that they started to drop out - and the aero (amongst other things) progressively got crazier and crazier.

.........  Which is why my slot car collection peters-out around that era.  I've got 3x 2003 models, 2x 2004, and 1x 2007 - all in test car livery - and newer than that..............  None at all.

Modern Rally leaves me cold, give me a TR7 V8 or mk2 Escort

I have asked 3 times for Julian Porter and/or Colin Clark to explain this and they never do.
Similarly the "Super Rally" where retirees and can re-join the following day, we have never been told how that scenario works.

I think that the message has got through that genuine fans and manufacturers want to see fairly standard looking cars.

The hybrid thing only added a green label that was trendy for a while but using synthetic fuel is a realistic way of continuing the rally ethos within the modern world.

Fake sound effects (or Active Sound as BMW call it) might work in F1 but not in Rally. If that arrives colour me gone.

In my opinion, I would like to see rally 2 cars as the top tier, less costs and more drivers/cars fighting for the overall victory. More Manufacturers supporting privateer teams rather than full works teams. Most important bring world rallying back to the UK. ?????

Oh am so happy the E Evan’s car is being done by Avant in this year’s black livery. Top job ?
