Food, glorious food - Gordon Steadman - 13th-Apr-19

The joys of living here! Four acres with half given over to supplying our fruit, vegetables and some meat.

Ronnie announce that the freezer was getting a bit full so I reduced the contents by several kilos and made some Raspberry jam. I feel some more rice pudding coming on. Nothing like it with jam stirred into it Bigsmile

Another few kilos to do today!!

2 acres is a heck of a veg patch. Must be a lot of work.

It is...or has been! Ronnie is a professional er...horticulturist (that's what her certificates say) or as she is wont to put it - gardner. I mow the grass.

The whole place is becoming a bit much for us now as we age and that is one reason why we are selling up. Several of the plots have now been sewn to grass - cheers, more work for me - but she still keeps up the food production.

We have a thing about not eating any pre-prepared food. We like to know what's in the food we eat. It does make for some work but worth it both for flavour and safety.

I can smell a rabbit on the stove now......all those fresh herbs adding to the aroma Cool

Two acres? We have enough trouble managing half an allotment!

Speaking of which there is actually a single spear of asparagus poking through at the moment. Perhaps I will actually get a crop at last after three years waiting for it to establish itself.

We practiced with an allotment before we came out here although Ronnie was used to managing large estates so it was small beer for her.  Our plot here was virtually a full time job for her although she ran a rose nursery at the same time. She does outside and I do inside was the deal so how come I have to  mow the grass? Typical woman, taking advantage.

Grass cutting is a favourite pastime for me , I do ours and two others ,one takes me 3 hours on a ride on but I love getting the stripes in the lawn !!!!

Three hours.......oh lucky man Bigsmile

Of our four acres, two are just meadow that needs keeping in check occasionally. I set aside some time!~

Believe it or not, I actually mow our meadow with a scythe.

It takes me blooming weeks, and it's hard work. But it's supposed to be good for the wild flowers, and it's definitely good for all of the little animals that live there because I'm so slow that they have plenty of time to move out of the way.
