Ford Transit slot cars - JasonB - 6th-Aug-24

Apparently the first Ford Transit rolled off the production line at Ford's Langley plant in Berkshire, England, on this day in 1965.

As it happens, one of my favourite slot vehicles is a Pendle's resin kit of a MkI bullnose, which I bought years and years ago.

It's certainly not built for competitive racing. It's a good model, but it is really heavy, and since most of that weight is in the thick resin body, the centre of gravity is way up high.

It's so heavy, and the tyres are so narrow that it needs plenty of advanced warning if you expect it to accelerate or brake.

But it is so much fun to drive. You can really feel the heft of it, but strangely the skinny tyres combined with the weight provide a decent amount of grip, and make it a really satisfying drive. And in spite of the high centre of gravity, it doesn't topple over as easily as you might imagine, as the tyres usually lose grip just before it goes barrel rolling, allowing a controlled oversteer.

The driver is called Dave, obviously.

I'm sure there must be other people who have Transits, so please post them up here. Thumbup

Unfortunately all my cars, track, and scenery is packed away in boxes in the attic at home, a place I have not lived for over two years, and rarely get to visit.

Here are mine. A cheap eBay purchase which was a poor conversion of a plastic model with a Scalextric Metro chassis grafted on. Tel (Savage GT) fitted an upgraded chassis and motor to them and they go quite well now. We often race them at our GOLD meetings and they are good fun.

No, I'm doing up my parents' house, which I inherited after they passed away. It's taking a lot longer than expected, partly due to the difficulty in finding good tradesmen, partly because there is a lot more work to do than I anticipated, also because our builder fell off a scaffold and was out of action for several months, the flooring company were incompetent, and the ground work guys started messing us about.

I'm only about an hour's drive from home, so I could make it back more often, if it weren't for the fact that I'm also looking after about twenty chickens, two cats, and a horse livery business. That's not a huge amount of work, but I need to be here first thing in the morning and last thing at night, and there are no days off.

I moan about the situation, but the truth is that I am very lucky, and once the house is completed, the rent should allow us to retire fairly comfortably, so I just have to keep reminding myself of that.
