Axle length to front/rear track relationship - Gielsy78 - 14th-Mar-24

Hey. Quick (hopefully) question. Given a "standard" screw-held wheel, is there some degree of common relationship between axle length and track?

For example, do you take the track and minus 5mm to work out the necessary axle length? Like, a 65mm track would require a 60mm axle; 60mm, 55mm, etc...?

I only have a couple of knurled axle cars so far so don't have a great reference point for this and am trying to be economical in ordering parts to build up a couple of loose bodies.

Thanks

"standard" screw-held wheel might have been standard 20++ years ago...not any more.

Okay, so if we take as an example some Slot.it Ø15.8 x 8.2 mm or NSR 16x8, something in that range?

Maybe not expecting a definitive answer, just some rough idea. Given track is measured to the tyre centre line on each side, and the screw mounting point for most wheels would seem to allow the axle to reach that point, I'd expect the required axle length to be more or less the same as the track. However, i can see cars listed with 55mm track and 48mm axles, for example, so that clearly isn't the case.

Track width by definition is tyre centre to tyre centre but most of us use overall width across the tyrewalls.

I use 3/32" drill blanks and cut them to length if necessary so they just sit flush with the end of the boss on the wheel.

hi Gielsy

since almost all after market wheels use a grub screw assembley to attach the wheel securely to the axle
a +/- of probably up to 5mm is acceptable in axle length ( inserts can hide a lot )
i think the vast range of axle lengths available is such to accommodate this 5mm variation
i usually just measure the width of the body and work from there
but same as Kevan , i tend to use drill blanks and bespoke cut accordingly for each car

regarding the 'old' type screw axles , i have found some small variation to track is achievable using the locking nut behind the wheel

Perfect, thanks. That makes perfect sense and makes things a lot clearer.
