MSCC 2024 Race results & reports etc. - Kevan - 7th-Jan-24

Race reports - 4th January 2024 - Club Revoslots plus Grand Prix & PreWing F1
.
A new year and a new race calendar.
The race calendar has a couple of new additions for 2024, one was trialled last week with the Targa Florio and looks like a good idea and will be repeated again 3 times.  The other is a brand new idea with the focus on fun rather than racing…TV & film cars which is on the calendar 4 times.
.
Heats tonight were 5 minutes, 2 drivers per race.
.
CLUB REVOSLOTS + club controllers
.
These are remarkably good for a club car series, the tyres have superb grip on our track and are now in their 3rd year of use with little signs of wear.
.
The closest race was the final one, Heat #6 as Brian (Blue Viper) lapped Mike B (Red Porsche) once.
.
Kev, Brian & Mike B managed their best score with the yellow Marcos whilst Ed did best with the Viper.
.
Heat wins in heat order for Kev, Brian & Mike B.

.

.
GRAND PRIX & PRE-WING F1
.
Now for a change of pace as these have to be driven carefully…as the marshals found out!
.
Heat #2 was good viewing, Brian’s Vanwall needs new tyres and doesn’t look as stable as usual which meant Ed had a chance with his Lancia Ferrari D50…it was close…another lap and he would have caught the Vanwall as that gap was quickly closing as you will see in the video.
.
Brian was involved in another close race, Heat #6, the last race of the evening, Vanwall in the Yellow lane chasing Mike’s Connaught in the Red lane, whilst not as close and exciting a finish as Heat #2 was, nonetheless close enough with the Connaught winning by just under a lap.
.
Kev’s hefty Alfa Bimotore must be wearing those tyres down but it rarely falls off the track, had a best run in Heat #3 in the Yellow lane.

Next week is Small Sports/Saloons followed by F1 (including Classic F1).  As Brian was asking when we’re next racing Classic F1’s maybe we’ll see his Lotus 72 (or is it a Ferrari 312 B2) in action!

RE: MSCC 2024 Race results & reports etc. - Kevan - 13th-Jan-24

Race reports - 11th January 2024 - Small Sports/Saloons plus Classic F1/F1
.
An opportunity to race two more classes of cars for the first time on the new track surface, what will the F1’s be like with even more grip!...that is if you brought the right cars for the nights racing as Gav found out when he took a 1956 Lancia Ferrari D50 out of his box…that was last week Gav! and found himself well off the pace of the much faster F1’s
.
Heats tonight were 200 seconds, 2 drivers per race.
.
Small Sports/Saloons

[attachment=33438]
.
The usual favourites were brought out to race, Gav’s Cobra & Bri’s Ferrari whilst Mike’s DBR1 made an appearance in class after a couple of Le Manx outings and a return to racing for Kev’s Big Healey after a few years gathering dust.
Ed intended racing his recently setup car, Ninco Jag XK120 but the rear jitters not only made it sound awful but making it difficult to drive…a loose rear tyre was found to be the (probable) problem…pit crew to the rescue once more! That meant the trusty Metro 6R4 got a run.
.
Things didn’t get competitive on track until Heat #4 as Mike & Brian were difficult to separate until Brian’s Ferrari left the track, he slowly clawed back the loss of track time but chucked it away again half way through the race which Mike’s Aston Martin DBR1 won by only half a lap.
.
Ed & Gav showed how to have a close race in the very next heat, steady Eddie’s Metro 6R4 stayed on track whilst the very quick AC Cobra went on sightseeing detours a few times too many but did make for the closest race of the night as the Metro won by a mere 1.7 seconds.
.
Kev’s black Healey with swept back Le Mans windscreen isn’t as quick as some of his cars in this class but went round nicely enough, his closest race was Heat #6 against Brian’s Ferrari 365P2.
.

.
Classic F1/F1

[attachment=33439]
.
As previously mentioned Gav brought a knife to a gun fight, the Lancia Ferrari totally outgunned by the modern era F1’s and strangely his best run was in the difficult Red lane.
.
Heat #1, how would Kev’s Black Bull handle the high grip track…it was flying round! and flew round on all three lanes lowering the track record to 5.41 which sounds ludicrously fast but this car hasn’t had any changes for years and those back tyres feel like soft bubblegum.
.
Mike B started the night with a Scaley Brabham BT49 on a Mack chassis, tyres not glued to the wheels made it a handful as Ed found out with the XK120, a change to his tried & tested Merced’ish was even worse as that also had tyre issues…the club Proslot Ferrari was resurrected which went OK after a rear axle bearing was popped back in place but sounded like something was scraping on the track.  A loose screw under the chassis and one that was missing was sorted for his last race and that car was transformed, OK not particularly fast but planted in the corners.  Mike said ‘note to self, wheels and tyres for next time’.
.
The other two cars, Brian & Ed both racing NSR F1’s had no problems, Brian’s looked like it had a magnet as the car was planted and went faster each race, a 6.0 second fast lap is easily the fastest that car has gone.
Ed’s NSR went best in Yellow lane and a hot lap of 6.6 seconds but when his controller comes back we can expect a large jump in performance with all his cars…apparently it’s in the post on it’s way back!

Next week is Group 5 and Saloon/DTM

RE: MSCC 2024 Race results & reports etc. - Kevan - 27th-Jan-24

Race reports - 25th January 2024 - Saloon + Sports

A great turnout of club members tonight with seven racers.
.
As we missed racing last week due to the weather we took a vote on which of the four classes over these two weeks were favourite:
Group 5 got 2 votes, Saloon got 5 votes, Club BMW got no votes and Sports got 5 votes…
.
SALOON
.
Gav intended racing a SlotIt Opel, without doubt the best standard class Saloon you can buy, but they still need setting up so he ended up racing Mike’s Moggy Racer.
.
Ed has his thumb controller back and it’s not only been fixed but upgraded to the same spec as the PWM2 with a couple of extra adjustments which we worked on after racing was over.
.
Kev raced with Ed & Gav
.
Chris hasn’t been able to race much recently so is still learning how to deal with the extra grip the new track surface gives.  His Honda Civic suffering with ‘too much grip’ and ‘too much brakes’, no doubt he’ll get used to it as this car goes great.
.
Mike brought an interesting car to race, a resin Jaguar XJ12C on a bespoke 3D chassis made by Kev…and it’s a rocket…but body mounting screws kept falling out to halt racing a couple of times.
.
Kev raced a race ready SCX Mercedes DTM, one of a few basic cars he’s been working on that have very little in the way of race adjustments available, SCX, Ninco and Fly cars without motor pods.  The Merc is easy to drive without being overpowered…and competitive.
.
Brian has brought his Peugeot 406 to race recently because it was always a really good running car and rarely deslots.
.
Geoff has his SlotIt Opel back from the proxy but seems to prefer the challenge of racing his 4WD MSC Scooby, it’s quick as Mike found out but can be prone to ‘Rally Rage’.
.
[attachment=33534]
.
SPORTS
.
Brian volunteered to race with Gav & Ed, they’re good to race against whilst trying to beat each other.  He’s worked on an NSR Mosler and looks super smooth going round the track.
.
Gav’s NSR Audi R18 looks like it has a magnet…it hasn’t as it was checked after one of his heats, it’s a great race car once he gets used to it.
.
Ed’s SlotIt Jag XJR9 is probably a little underpowered with a Pioneer 21k motor and may go back to the original motor for next time.
.
Chris usually favours his Mack chassied Dome Judd and did so tonight which is always good to watch but was suffering sudden rear end kicks in a couple of sharper corners, possibly due to the increased grip.
.
Mike decided to race his ‘Club Challenge’ Mosler…but forgot what it was like at full track power, i.e. lifting the front end coming onto the straights, this is dramatically reduced at 11v for the actual ‘Club Challenge’ races.  These are quick cars and managed a 6.2 hot lap.
.
Geoff was racing his Mosler on this surface for the first time and it’s very quick and consistent but goes best when full power is applied on the straights.
.
Kev’s ‘Copper Rocket’ Mosler was left at home tonight to race something else, a Black Arrow Lamborghini which to be honest isn’t much slower and very difficult to keep up with as Geoff found out in heat #2. Kev was driving a Ninco Lamborghini round in practice but not near the pace of the Moslers.
.

Next week is Mosler ‘Club Challenge’ #1 followed by TV & Film Cars

RE: MSCC 2024 Race results & reports etc. - Kevan - 4th-Feb-24

Race reports - 1st Feb 2024 - NSR ‘Club Challenge’ #1 plus TV/Film cars
.
NSR ‘CLUB CHALLENGE’ #1 - track at 11 volts

[attachment=33661]
.
This year we have two distinct events, the official ‘Club Challenge Championship’ and an unofficial ‘Club Challenge non-Championship’
.
During practice Geoff put his car on the track and whizzed round in 5.9 seconds…he was going to be hard to beat tonight
.
The championship contenders this year: Chris, Ed, Gav, Mike B & Mike H
.
Chris, Ed & Gav raced each other tonight and Heat #1 saw the best score in Yellow lane all night…as Ed won this heat to beat the rest of us in that lane…nice one Ed!
.
The tyres on these cars are now so grippy that we’re seeing a few deslots similar to what we saw the last two years when we raced these at 13.8 volts, consequently the overall lead ebbed and flowed.  Andy & Geoff set the pace in the Red lane, Ed & Kev in the Yellow lane and Kev, Brian & Geoff in the Blue lane.
.
Andy was always quick but got drawn into racing for the lead a couple of times too many and ended up in the barriers.
.
Brian just couldn’t get going in the Red lane but flew round in the Blue lane in his last race to take some kind of comfort from the evenings racing.
.
The overall winner not decided until the last two laps as Kev, who was 4th overall before this race had a great run to overtake Geoff in top spot…as did Andy much to Geoff’s huge disappointment.
.
As far as the championship is concerned, with great runs in both Red and Blue lanes, Chris finished just over a lap ahead of Ed with Gav a few laps further back.
Gav’s best run by far was in the Yellow lane but really struggled on the other two lanes.

.
TV/FILM CARS (Back to Basics)

[attachment=33664]
.
This was going to be interesting, now bear in mind this event isn’t about having the fastest car as there were LOTS of bonuses to be added before and after the racing.
.
Back to basics means no racing specials and to discourage that the basic cars were given lap bonuses for the various standard parts on their car then racing lap bonuses based on each cars fastest lap on the three lanes.
.
Some of us have been prepping cars for this 4 part series for many weeks…some have done little to no prep at all…consequently we saw a huge gap in race performance…but those gaps closed right down once the bonuses were added.  So despite Andy saying we’ll all be racing Batmobiles because it went well (and it did after much prep) that isn’t necessary as you’ll see from the results, it’s all about keeping in the slot and out of trouble not having the overall fastest car.
Kev’s ‘The Batman 2022’ car had the least deslots of any car and thereby the best chance of overall win…but it was much closer than expected!
.
One thing that came out of this event is the cars themselves, although all but one were Scalextric cars, one had a set of plastic wheels and gears from a standard Ninco, which is also a ‘Back 2 Basics’ car so I’ve given the bonuses for those too (Ed’s Batmobile).
.
Gav’s Ferrari isn’t a B2B car so didn’t get many car bonuses
.

[attachment=33665]

[attachment=33666]

I think it’s fair to say this event was a big success and look forward to the next one in May.

Next week is Slot Rally

RE: MSCC 2024 Race results & reports etc. - Kevan - 17th-Feb-24

Race reports - 15th Feb 2024 - GP & Prewing F1 followed by Small Sports/Saloons
.
There’s only a couple of weeks to go before the GT Sport Proxy cars have to arrive at their initial destination. Tonight all six cars were seen on track for some testing with the track set at 12v to find that some cars are definitely ready to go and some still have basic prep work needing doing.
.
Tonight’s racing was Grand Prix/Prewing F1 followed by Small Sports/Saloons
.
GRAND PRIX/PREWING F1
.
We had a couple of ‘Back 2 Basics’ cars tonight as Ed & Brian raced standard Cartrix Lancia D50 cars.  Brian kindly set up Ed’s car quite a while back so should have been two steps ahead setting up his own car…but what on earth was going on with the new car he won as ‘Mosler Club Challenge’ champion! It was flat out before it got on the straights, in fact he drove one lane flat out for the full race.  In comparison Ed’s Lancia was flying round the track, Brian had no chance to keep up as they were in the same race in the final heat…but the tyres got a nice polish…investigation is now underway.
.
Kev’s Alfa Bimotore and Mike B’s Connaught raced for ‘Open GP Class’ honours.  They did race together once, the hefty Bimotore too quick for the little Connaught but Mike did win two races as he was up against Ed’s and Brian’s Lancias in one heat with Brian’s Lancia in the other heat .
.
Andy raced his favourite Ferrari 156 as the sole Prewing F1 so not actually racing anyone but the closest any car managed to get was Kev’s Alfa Bimotore in Heat #6 that finished two laps behind.

[attachment=33869]
.
SMALL SPORTS/SALOONS
.
It doesn’t happen very often, in fact I don’t think it’s happened at all before but the majority of cars raced tonight were Small Saloons.  Four of the heats featured two Small Saloons with the final heat all three lanes taken by a Small Saloon.
.
Andy opted to race a tiny but rapid Austin A35, the way the body dipped in the corners was very realistic.  Up against Brian’s quicker Ferrari 365 and Kev’s quicker Alfa he didn’t win a heat but was right on the tail of the Ferrari until a deslot two thirds the way into the race.
.
Kev opted to change his car at the last moment seeing so many Small Saloons being raced so the Revoslot Alfa GTAm got to race for a change.  Swapping the standard anglewinder spur gear for a SlotIt makes it a much quieter runner.
.
Mike’s Moggy Racer went great in both Red and Yellow lanes but a disaster in the Blue lane as a chunk of ballast came loose after a deslot and jammed the front wheel…a shake about got the blockage out of the car but a loss of 3 laps in total made the Moggy’s result look worse than it actually was.  One heat win for the Moggy.
.
Ed planned to race his Jag XK120 which had a motor swap but didn’t have the excess motor shaft cut off (originally set up with axle spacers), consequently the ‘brass dust of death’ covered the inside of his car…and Brian’s Ferrari’s tyres.  His trusty Metro 6R4 got another run out and combined with his new Truspeed thumbie (Thumbspeed) controller went pretty well.
.
After the sleep inducing ‘racing’ with his Lancia in the earlier class, Brian’s Ferrari 365 P2 with Shark 22 motor (originally a Shark 28) tested by Andy to show it capable of a 6.7 second lap, went on to win all three of his heats, managing to get into the 6.9’s

[attachment=33870]

--------------------------------------------

Next week is the first of the theme nights, an ‘Italian Cars’ double header, race two different cars or the same one twice…Rather than a ‘predicted score’ handicap I might try using the ‘racing bonuses’ that seemed to work well for the TV/Film car night.

RE: MSCC 2024 Race results & reports etc. - Kevan - 26th-Feb-24

Race reports - 22nd Feb 2024 - Italian Cars Night

[attachment=34010]
.
A really good turnout tonight.
Theme nights have used a ‘predicted score’ in the past to try to close the field together more but after the recent TV/Film Car night which used a race bonus system based on fastest laps let’s see what this turns out like.  The idea being the event isn’t all about who’s got the fastest car but sometimes it helps.
.
We had four ‘Back to Basics’ cars which were all raced in the first round of racing with three of them racing each other for the three heats.
.
We also had a trio of Gulf Lamborghini Huracans which raced each other for the three heats of the second round of racing.
.
Mike raced a very interesting car in the first round, an SRC Alfa 33TT12 with what turned out to be a cracked chassis that limped home to finish it’s third race with a lightly superglued repair.  This was one of four ‘Back to Basics’ cars seen in the first round of racing. He intended racing it in the second round also but borrowed a Ferrari 458 off Andy.
.
Of the two cars Brian raced, he wasn’t a happy bunny as far as the Ferrari 365 is concerned.  Having recently calmed it down from a Shark 28 to a Shark 22 it is capable of going round under 7 seconds but can’t be raced like a Mosler.  His second car, the Maserati looks calm and smooth on track and was expected to do well after the bonus laps were added..
.
Kev decided to race a Ninco Lamborghini Gallardo recently purchased from Roger, it goes really well for a one-piece chassis car, one of the four ‘B2B’ cars.  His second car was another Lamborghini, a very rapid white Black Bull that was comfortably the quickest car round the track and so gained no bonus laps…but was it quick enough to beat those cars that did pick up bonus laps?
.
Andy initially said he was racing a Ferrari 512BBLM as his first car but morphed into a Ferrari F40 come heat #1.  His second car was chosen to race against Chris & Geoff in a trio of Gulf Lamborghini Huracans triple header.
.
Geoff’s first car, a Scaley Ferrari F430 was one of four ‘B2B’ cars, the three races it was in against two other ‘B2B’ cars was very entertaining, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory not just once but numerous times…needs a deeper guide!  His second car was one of the trio of Gulf Huracans, the closest of which was Chris’s that finished just ahead.
.
Ed’s first car was a Fly Lancia 037, he’s spent ages working on it and it’s fair to say is a dramatically improved race car.  One of the ‘B2B’ cars, raced against Mike’s Alfa and Geoff’s Ferrari for three heats and got it finally into top gear in it’s last race beating the Ferrari.  His second car is a belter, a SlotIt Ferrari 412P, finished only a lap behind Brian’s Maserati and Mike’s Ferrari 458, drives like it has a magnet…which of course it doesn’t have…we checked.
.
Chris put a Fly 365 GTB/4 Daytona onto a SlotIt HRS2 chassis recently, it looks fantastic but the tyres were holding it back which meant it was a little inconsistent and subsequently finished down the pecking order.  His second car was one of the ‘gang of three’ Gulf Huracans seen in the new FB club header photo.  Finishing ahead of Geoff’s Huracan in two heats.
.
So to the ‘results’...as is usually the case with handicap or bonus adjusted racing, the fastest car didn’t win which is a great thing because anyone can win as long as their car is set up nicely and easy to drive and driven consistently…much like setting a good proxy car up in fact.
The most interesting thing was how well most of the ‘Back 2 Basics’ cars did and if Geoff’s Ferrari had a deeper guide then all four of them would have been in the top six cars…what more incentive do you need to get one of your basic standard cars off that dusty shelf?

RE: MSCC 2024 Race results & reports etc. - Kevan - 3rd-Mar-24

Race report - 29th Feb 2024 - Club Revoslot followed by F1
.
Six Revo racers tonight with some close racing and scores...plus a few too many 'offs'.

[attachment=34086]
.
Andy's best run was with the Marcos in yellow lane, for some reason this car was shooting off track and under the bridge, I think the drivers that followed in that lane backed off as the lap times were down for that car.
.
Kev's best run was with the Viper in blue lane, Andy & Brian seemed to have problems with this one.
.
Mike's best run was with the Marcos in yellow lane and his fastest laps by some margin.
.
Brian's best run was the Porsche in the red lane, best by two laps over the Marcos but lost loads of time with the blue Viper.
.
Gav's best run was with the yellow Marcos and another who lost loads of time with the blue Viper.
.
Ed's best run was with the Viper in the blue lane and not far off Brian's score with that car.

[attachment=34089]
.
Ed had to leave after racing the Revos so we changed the running order with two drivers and three marshals.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Classic F1 plus F1 (plus Mike's Connaught)
[attachment=34087]
[attachment=34088]
.
Gav raced his Policar Ferrari, the sole Classic F1 car raced tonight.
.
Kev raced his MB/Allslot 'Black Bull' and was involved in some side-by-side racing with Andy's NSR F1 in Heat #6
.
A pair of NSR F1's, Andy vs Brian, Andy's was flying round tonight whilst Brian recovered from the earlier Club Revos to push his NSR F1 round probably close to the fastest he's ever got a car round this track before.
.
Mike raced his favourite Connaught, not really in any class tonight but gave Gav's Ferrari 312 B2 more than a run for it's money in Heat #7.
