Le Manx is back - Kevan - 5th-Jun-23

This was a great race last year so this year we're doing it twice, once this week and the other in 6 months time.

We're doing things slightly differently, Classics (pre-1975) cars first, Group C & LMP cars in the second part of the evening.

Handicap racing based on your best of 5 lap qually with closest to their target score as the handicap winner.

So far, the fastest car hasn't won one of our handicap events, it's all about having a consistent and predictable car.

Will we see a return of the big Caddy 'Le Monstre'...it's been spotted recently in testing!

For future reference, here's where you can find all cars that ever raced at Le Mans

Race reports - 8th June - Le Manx

Not only is it TT race week but Le Mans 24 hours is this weekend…and we had a room full of racers for a great nights racing with cars from many decades of Le Mans.

The plan for tonight, everyone do 5 qually laps with both of their cars, the best qually lap then being used to calculate a predicted perfect score over the three heats.  The closest to their target predicted score being the winner.

This is a great leveller, it rules out sandbagging and there's no advantage to be had anywhere other than keeping your qually time in mind and glancing at the score screen to see if you need to go faster or slower, try to focus on your own race, be consistent, don’t get drawn into trying to catch or keep up with faster cars…the one thing you can’t allow for is luck which comes in two flavours, good and bad.

The two eras of racing tonight were Classic Le Manx for pre-1975 cars (no Group B’s) with the second era being Group C and LMP’s.

Quite a few new cars were seen racing tonight, it’s always good to see diversity on the track with a lot of these cars resurrected from club members' collections

Mike B was back tonight and kindly brought a thumb controller for Ed to try.

Our two visitors borrowed a couple of cars each, Alan racing a Porsche 917 and a Nissan R90 whilst Nigel raced a Ford GT40 or was that a Matra Simca…and in the second race a Audi R8C…or was that a Matra Simca again?  Alan fell for the oldest trick in the book, getting drawn into trying to catch faster cars with innevitable marshall intervention but went really well and had some super racing.

The closest race was Heat #6 in Le Manx Classic as Brian (GT40) in Red, Geoff (GT40) in Yellow and Alan (Porsche 917) in Blue all crossed the line less than 1.3 seconds apart!

Gav brought a selection of Ferraris, Mike brought the same two cars as the first Le Manx we did last December with the Aston Martin DBR1 being the oldest car on the track.

Chris brought a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 on a SlotIt HRS2 AW chassis, the same setup we recently saw on two of the best handling Rally proxy cars, it went surprisingly well, or is that unsurprisingly well as that seems a great setup.  A 3D chassis is under development for this car…

Kev raced his Porsche 908/3 again as we saw in the last Le Manx plus a resurrected SCX Audi which went surprisingly well with a NSR motor.

Andy’s cars of choice were very quick, the Porsche 917 was easily the fastest car on track tonight…but the handicap system doesn’t seem to favour the fastest cars.  The Toyota Gr.C was more than a match for anything else in the second event.

Geoff and Brian seemed to want to race each other, GT40 vs GT40 followed by Porsche 956 vs Porsche 956, Brian won the GT40 battle, Geoff won the Porsche battle.

…and Ed was racing properly for the first time, the thumb controller obviously what he needed.

RE: Le Manx is back - Kevan - 8th-Dec-23

Race reports - 7th December - Le Manx Classic followed by Le Manx Group C & LMP
.
Andy was back from his hols and testing cars during practice announced that his cars had TOO MUCH grip…a world first surely, Andy with TOO MUCH grip!...how would it affect racing?
.
The format for tonight is the same as similar themed events this year, the best lap time in the Red lane being used to calculate a predicted overall score, the closest to each drivers predicted score declared the winner.
.
There’s three results sheets, one each for Le Manx Classic and Le Manx Group C/LMP and one for a combined Team score.

.
We saw most of these cars during the summer Le Manx but this time Andy decided to race his Matra Simca MS670…TOO MUCH GRIP is now a genuine excuse for deslotting…well it was for the first couple of times.
.
Things got close in Heat #3, although Geoff’s GT40 won in the Blue lane, not far behind we saw Brian’s GT40 and Ed’s Ferrari 412P crossing the line simultaneously.
.
The next close race was Heat #5 as Geoff in Red lane took all three cars out at the end of the main straight ending up half a lap down, a few laps later Brian’s GT40 knocked Ed’s Ferrari over the barrier into the path of Geoff’s GT40 ending up with all 3 cars off track again…it wasn’t the last time Geoff’s GT40 was off track in this heat leaving Brian’s GT40 to win less than two seconds ahead of Ed’s Ferrari
.
Heat #6 was also close as Kev’s Porsche 908/3 (Yellow) and Andy’s Matra Simca (Blue) had separate and costly deslots but the Porsche finished 2 seconds ahead at the end.
.
Mike’s Aston Martin just got on with it, doing his own thing with a best run in Yellow lane in Heat #2.

Le Manx Group C & LMP

[attachment=32914]
.
A swap round of a few drivers with Mike B, Brian & Ed racing together, Heat #1 was close as Brian & Ed were too quick for Mike’s Peugeot 908, Brian’s Porsche 956/962 finished fractions of a second ahead of Ed’s Jaguar XJR9.
.
That was the only close race for the Group C/LMP races…but Heat #5 was a good one for Ed just when a clean run was needed, finished a lap ahead of Brian’s Porsche.
.
Geoff, Kev & Andy raced together, Geoff’s gold leaf Lola going really well in the final race whilst in the Blue lane.
Andy’s Group C Nissan had three similar runs but a couple of deslots on each lane kept him off the pace of Kev’s Audi LMP that managed three clean runs.

TEAM RESULT

--------------------------------------------

Next week is the final Mosler ‘Club Challenge’ of 2023.  The last one was a car swap with the track at 11V which was easily the best race of this years series as the cars were so much closer.  Let’s see what condition the tyres are in after racing at 11V on the new grippy surface - TOO MUCH GRIP may well be heard even though the tyres on these have never seen a drop of oil.

Great looking track!

RE: Le Manx is back - Kevan - 15th-Dec-23

Thanks.  It has a bit of everything and drives differently if we switch the polarity of the track to race the other way round.
