1st July 2022 - Sports GT Round 3 - Savage GT - 8th-Jul-22

Friday 1st July was round 3 of the Sports GT class of racing at Mussel Bay.  This being the fastest class of car that races it is normally filled with modern and classic Le Mans style cars; with their low slung bodies and wide wheel track they prove to be fast and stable.  This week, however, there was quite a selection of other cars that people were racing which brought a unique character to the racing. Among the variety of cars there was some rally style cars, saloons, GT3 cars and even a beetle, this vast selection of cars racing proved to be very eventful and at times often humorous.
Mark and Elliot had a good round of heats using their rally cars style cars, which although they looked like they had a high centre of  gravity proved to be fast and very stable.  Paul was putting in some good performances with his Alfa Romeo 156; this was a quick car but lacks the pace to keep up with the really fast LMP cars. Andy who managed to blow up the motor in his Toyota GT One provided some entertainment with a VW Beetle, which as you would expect was very top heavy and had a mind of its own, so switched to his BMW Z4 GT3 class car.
The other person to mention was Bobby who had a spectacular crash while using Jakes LMP Aston Martin which came off at the hairpin splitting the chassis and leaving it in need of a bit of work.
Once things had calmed down after the heats the serious business of the finals began.  Unfortunately a few people had to leave after the heat races so there were 3 finals with 3 racers in each so that there was enough people to do the marshalling for the course.

Final C: Tom in Blue, Paul in Red and Andy in Yellow. This race pitted Toms Saleen S7 against Pauls Alfa saloon and Andy’s BMW Z4 all different styles so the racing would show how each car compare to the other.  All three drivers got off to a good start and racing was tight but Andy and Paul pulled put a lead over Tom.  Andy struggled to keep the car in the slot and had a few offs which meant that Paul managed to pull ahead, even with a few offs here and there Paul held onto his lead.  As they crossed the line Paul came in first Andy was Second and Tom was third.

Final B Mark Blue, Elliot Yellow and Paul in Red.  Off the line Mark and Elliot got off well and pulled out an early lead over Paul.  Elliot and Mark were using very similar cars so as expected there was not a lot to choose between them in the first half of the race, constantly swapping places for the lead.  At the back Paul was steadily closing in on Elliot after he had a few offs and eventually got passed meanwhile Mark had checked out at the front having gained a good lead. It finished Mark In first Paul in second and Elliot in third.

Main Final: Mark in blue, James in red and Ken in yellow.  With the three best racers of the night now fighting it out for the top places this race was fast and close.  There was not a lot for the marshals to do apart from enjoy watching.  Ken took the battle for first to James managing to keep up with James’s blistering pace and matching him on the breaks at every turn.  Mark who although fast couldn’t keep up with James and Ken, eventually James managed to shake of Ken to take the win with ken a close second and mark bringing his car home in third.

Thanks to Andy for providing the race report  Thumbup

Unfortunately for me, I missed this round due to covid, and missed round 2 due to illness, so I have some work to do to chase a podium for the championship !
