The opening round of the 2022 British Rally Championship starts with two runs through a seafront stage in Clacton on Saturday evening. There'll be live coverage via the rally Facebook page and via the HM Productions YouTube Channel. There's also streaming planned for the 12 stages on Sunday - which all take place on closed roads in the North East Essex countryside. This is the schedule...

I'll be somewhere out on the route being used by stages 4, 8 and 12.

The Corbeau Seats Rally was the first closed-road event to take place in England after the law was changed in 2017 allowing such events. Twelve months later and Chelmsford Motor Club (who also organise the Brands Hatch Winter Stages) held the country's first closed-road stage rally based around Clacton. It's brilliant to see the event back after a Covid-enforced break and - for the first time - hosting a round of the British Rally Championship.

The coverage looks good. HM Productions do a lot of the Irish rallies, which I enjoy watching on YouTube.

However, I am looking forward to seeing the cars in the flesh. All the stages are pretty fast, and I'm about a mile into the one, at a tight left-hander after a flat-out start. And yes, busy enjoying lots of Spring motorsport - a sprint at Goodwood today, Italian car day at Brooklands next Saturday and back to Goodwood for the first Breakfast Club of the year the following morning.

The first run through the stage (Stage 4) saw a car go in ditch at the post beyond mine and then a few cars later, this one into a tree at the post before…

The stage was stopped with half the field passing through non-competitively. They‘ll be back again at 12.30.
