Which Classic Le Mans Car...? - BAracer - 23rd-Jan-22

Sold off some more bike gear, and am now in the market for a Classic Le Mans racer...post 76. 

I have come up with a short list of the following: - 

1. Slot.it Ferrari 512M: Not out yet, looks gorgeous, but does it have racing potential?

2. Thunder Slot McLaren M6B: Not quite as pretty as 1. but a proven racer.

3. NSR P68: Not as pretty as 1. or 2. (or most cars) but seems to have a reputation as a winner.

4. A good old NSR 908/3: The classic classic!


Any comments on which might be the best racer on wood in standard guise would be appreciated, along with any other obvious candidates i've missed?

Any Thunderslot - no other choice (especially at East Worthing). McLaren M6 is considered marginally the best. There’s also the M1A and the two Lolas - very little in it… all are potential winners. I raced Mike D’s Lola Coupé at East Worthing - and it was so glorious, I got my own.

All very good cars. Recently had a similar quandary as we have just started a classic le mans (pre 1993) class at our club.

No one has got their hands on a slot.it 512 yet so can't comment on that, the others didn't  race at le mans, if that matters to you.

908/3 is generally regarded as the quickest nsr (but not le mans), P68 next, but again I think didn't make it to le mans

Slot.it matra is quick as standard, probably quickest slot.it classic on wood.

Thunderslot Lola t70 is a le mans car, quick but tricky to set up for wood, the chassis and pod seem to be made of cling film 

Avant slot mirage g8 is a left field choice but you can fit a long can anglewinder so potentially very quick in a straight line

Are group c or group 5 classic enough? Some good quick cars there by slot it and sideways.

Jeremy,

If you want an off the shelf winner:
choose the thunderslot.

If you want a bit of a project car:
You might want to try he Policar Ferrari. 330p4 
Comes supplied with an MX16 motor in sidewinder.
Heavily modified, mine has :
- lightweight interior
- slot.it inline offset motor mount.
- Avant hurricane 25k long can motor
- lightweight axles
- alloy rear wheels 

Even with all of these mods, I still struggle to keep up with the thunderslots at LSCC, but I like the challenge.

Hi Jeremy, If in fact the class is for Le mans cars (post 76),...the M6B  does not qualify,..it was designed for and raced in the  North American CanAm series.......it never ran at Le mans.

I wish I had done a bit of checking before engaging typing fingers on Monday morning...the actual description of the class is as follows: -

Classic Sports – Any car that competed at Can Am, Le-Mans, WSCC etc prior to 1976.



(My excuse is that I had raced in a "Classic Le Mans" class at the weekend and my lazy brain had mixed the two up)

I think I am still at the stage of the hobby/sport where I want to learn how to build race cars rather than just buy one off the shelf.

(And yes, I do appreciate that an 'off the shelf' racer can always be worked on and improved, I'm just not sure I'm at the stage or have the facilities to better the TS or NSR offer)
