Diecast to slot car -
964rh - 15th-Feb-21
Morning all
After ordering the Batmobile Scalextric car, I started looking at other cars from my childhood to see if they exist in 1/32 slot car form
Not many do! So does anyone know if there’s an individual or company that could take diecast models and chop/change into a slot car for me?
The cars I’d love to get are
Ghostbusters Echo 1 (can only find HO scale)
Professionals Gold 3.0 mkIII Capri
Saint XJS
A Team van
Scooby Doo Mystery Machine
The Rinky Dink Panthermobile (big pink car the Pink Panther got out of in the credits)
Cheers
Rob

The Triumph Spitfire has never officially been release as a slot car (as a kit yes ... but only a MKIII) and it is readily available in many scales as a die cast.
It was Triumph's best selling model, particularly the MKIV/1500 version...
AND
It won a lot of championships in the US.

Scalextric seem to be on a roll with their TV and movie releases at the moment... so I'd hang on and see - especially with the Capri and XJS, which are both in the catalogue in other liveries. The new TV & Film range only started last year - and we've already had two DeLoreans, Only Fools & Horses Capri & Reliant van, 007 DB5, two 007 V8s, 1966 Batmobile, Batman & Joker 'inspired' cars, KITT and the 007 Esprit in just two catalogues - so I fully expect more new tooling in 2022. An iconic movie car that will sell well... Echo 1 fits the bill.
AutoWorld have done the Mystery Machine and Echo 1 in HO scale - and Tyco did the A-Team van. All sold very well. I am sure I have seen 1/32 scratch-built versions of all three (and some Wacky Races cars), but I don't think any were ever produced commercially. The Panthermobile also rings a bell...
There are plenty of people out there who've made single piece 'slush' moulds from diecasts. The two vans are going to be a lot easier to do that the Echo 1. The resin body will then fit on an adjustable chassis like the Pendle PCS32 chassis kit. It's a case of finding the 1/32 scale donor car and someone who'll do it for you or talk you through the process.

I think Gareth J/Chasecars did an A Team Van. Can't find any details of it though.
Edit: Found it!

Doyousha made a 1/25 scale plastic kit of the Pink Panther car which was last available for a while in the 80's but hard to find now. It may have been a reissue of the kit originally made by Eldon in the 60's.

Dinky Toys made a Pink Panther car which had a plastic body. The first release had a flywheel powered by pulling on a toothed belt and the later version had the back closed in to cover the space that previously held the flywheel drive. The second version would be better for conversion to a slot car.

At one time battered ones were almost two a penny at collectors fairs but I think they are a bit harder to find now. No idea what scale it was meant to be but at around 6 ins long it is quite close in size to a 1960's MASCAR in 1/32. The review in the link above does say it was short and stubby when compared to the real car but it might be possible to cannibalise two models to make it longer. The plastic body would make it more viable for a slot car conversion than any diecast.
AMT/Ertl produced a 1/24 or 1/25 scale plastic kit of the Ghostbusters Ecto1 and there were also some plastic toys with electronic sounds but I think they were large scale (about 12 ins long).

It's things like this that sparked scratch building.
If you can't buy it? Make it!

Just got to type 1 32 Ecto 1 (not EcHo 1) into a well known auction site and loads pop up, most of them pretty decent replicas too. Bulk are made by Jada.
Just noticed, the same people do a 1/32 Mystery Machine too - both are diecasts, of course. (They are in their 'Hollywood Cars' line-up, as is a Delorean and a Kitt 2000.)

Corgi did a 1/34 scale-ish Porsche 924 street version but there has never been a street version slot car...

Thanks for all the replies and links
So, a very quiet afternoon with my 7 month old has resulted in the following being ordered from Amazon/EBay
1 x A Team van
1 x Ecto 1
1 x Mystery Machine
4 x Pendle chassis
All in 1:32 diecast and all for not that much money
The Panthermobile corgi car is really quite expensive from the examples I’ve found (complete with the waving Pink Panther) so will hold off on that one and the Capri and XJS can wait to see if Scalextric release in the future
If I can get them sorted they’ll be heavy bits of kit but I’m not racing, just having a bit of fun with them.

Hi,
With regards to the Ecto 1 from Jada....
It is small, most definitely not 1:32 as advertised. I compared it against numerous American 1:32 slot cars from different manufacturers and it didn't even come close. Actually sent it back and politely requested a refund it was so far out...
Would be great if Scalextric took it on.
The Batmobile is top of this years pre order charts, so let's hope for more next year.
Good luck with your die cast builds, I'm just about to do some Majorette 1:32 hot rods, with Scalextric generic single seater chassis as donors, if they turn out OK I will post some photos.....
