Ferrari 512S - KensRedZed - 3rd-Nov-20

I bought a Fly Ferrari in the box that came with a broken chassis, and no decals. These Fly cars are not known for their box-stock handling capabilities. So I tried making a scratch chassis using the original sidewinder pod. The motor was upgraded to a SlotIt 25k. The plastic pod bushings were upgraded to roller bearings. Oilite bushings were installed for the front axle.

I had to cut the motor housing to get the inner bearing flanges to fit. I probably should have used single flange bearings. But I didn't have any in stock at the time of this build, so I improvised.

I used a brass chassis jig to perfectly line up the axles. Then epoxied the pod onto the aluminum.

Inserts and decals added. The livery chosen was the Targa Florio Ferrari driven by Nino Vaccarella in 1970. Decals came from a mix of stuff.

A brass weight adds cornering stability. 4-screws were also added to the pod/chassis to prevent the shock of an off from separating the assembly.

Nice looking conversion. I tried to convert to a Slotit motor for our club class and had the same problem with bearings but I got round the problem by cutting the bearings in half with a dremel to make two single flange bearings and put the flange on the outside of the motor mount.
Not ideal but it worked fine once the bearings were glued in.

It has no shortage of power with a 25k SlotIt motor and running gear. The car is a red rocket in the straights.

The rear wheels are the old BWA .460 wide. The urethane rear tires also could not be wider. It corners on a dime and spits out change.

It often finds itself on the podium. Unless I get silly and have too many off's.

Pictures as requested. I think i used Slotit bearings designed for a Proslot chassis which are double the width of a standard bearing so they were quite easy to cut down the middle with a small hacksaw. Not terribly pretty but it worked.

The first time I built it up I did a rush job for a club night and forced everything together not realising that the Slotit bearings were fouling the motor mount. It was a dog so I put it to one side while I built up other cars for club.

Lockdown has given me the chance to drag some of the projects out of the drawers and spent time sorting them out. Hopefully it will run ok now but doubt that it will be a match for the standard Slotit classics that we run.
