Applying Body Wrap Decal to a White Kit - BARacer - 28th-Jun-20

So I have bitten the bullet with regards completing my Scaleauto Porsche 991 GT3 racer by acquiring my first white body kit and my first body wrap (from Pattos Place). Have received the body, but the wrap has not yet arrived, but have started thinking about the whole process...

So where do I start with the wrap? Literally! With the roof and head down to the wheel arches, or at the wheel arches and work up to the roof?

Any other tips also very welcome!

Challenging !

I did this Rover as a wrap as I couldn't print the white bits. I did it in separate parts for the roof, bonnet and sides. I printed plain blue pieces so that I could fill any gaps.
I couldn't envisage any success in doing a single mat type pattern and getting the lettering level, hence the separate areas. It seemed natural to start at the top but in hindsight, working upwards would have meant that any joins/overlaps would be less noticeable. Although, again, working upwards might have ended up with the lettering squint.
The wheel arches were the worst bits, getting them wrinkle-free took a lot of time brushing with Humbrol Decal-Cote.

The leading edge of the bonnet and headlight areas were not too difficult in terms of getting the material wrapped around the edge.

This bodyshell has the tail lights moulded in and getting the material to form around the lights was another long painful exercise (with lots of patching).

Allow lots of time to do the job as it needs to be done in one session, once it dries corrections are v difficult - another reason to do it in sections.

Wrap it up - Tamar - 28th-Jun-20

Can offer you some tips Jeremy, but would be easier to do so if you posted a pic of Patto's decal set or the car you are goin to make.

with kind regards
Tamar

Will do proper pics when the wrap arrives, but it's this one...

...which will go on my Scaleauto Porsche 991 white body something like this...

...NOT!

Lovely car, very catching.
Small tip for when you order your next set of Patto's decals, you can ask to "delete" one color, in this case, deleting the body color would have been helpful.
When you get your decals, try to find paint that matches the decal body color as close as possible.
I would advise to use a scalpel to cut/trim the logo's and graphics as close as possible and not try to wrap the whole body.
There are some major differences between the shape of the Scaleauto 991 GTE and the GT3 version that this livery belongs to.

What I don't understand is why you went for Patto's full wrap decals instead of the set from Slotfabrik ?

RE: Applying Body Wrap Decal to a White Kit - BARacer - 29th-Jun-20

I went for a wrap as i wanted to eliminate the need to paint the shell as far as possible, as getting a good paint finish, floating transfers into position and adding the right top clear coat without melting everything underneath felt like too much for a first attempt at finishing a shell. Not that i am expecting to eliminate having to use a bit of paint, but i felt that a wrap would better suit my knife skills and my eye for fitting and aligning two strange shaped things together.

And yes, maybe i will be very disappointed with the outcome, in which case i am imaging there will be a way to remove it all and go down the paint and Slofabrik route...and in the future, i will probably go down that route once i get this first attempt out of the way.

Anyway, whatever happens, i will blame you Tamar for  setting me off down this path with all the advice and encouragement you offer on here, and which a constantly use as my reference points.  Thumbup

This is one small step for Tamar, one giant leap for BourneAgainRacer...

RE: Applying Body Wrap Decal to a White Kit - Tamar - 30th-Jun-20

From the very first steps, learning to walk will include a lot of falling down and getting straight up again.
So I'm not going to tell you how make you first steps, but can only advice...decalling is like walking, start with small(er) decals first  Thumbup

The second piece of advice I can give people who are considering doing a Patto's wrap..is to order two set's.
In most cases your shipping costs will be bigger than the cost of the decal set's, at least with two sets you'll have some spare decals and most important some spare body colored decals to patch area's where Patto's wrap may not fit your specific slot body.

Last but not least...never give up on a project, there's always a way to fix things.

Hi Tamar

So, I have been thinking of little else since your last message, and I do like a good think...one of the other reasons for wrapping was that I have no plans to do this again for a while, so did not want to have to get involved in buying airbrushes and similar kit.

I did order two sets of wraps, so I got that bit right! However, I have reminded myself that all your wraps are based on bespoke templating, and mine won't be. And as soon as I fit the first piece, I will probably know whether to continue or not!

So I have been looking at Tamiya Fluorescent yellow spray paint (which type for body shells (AS, PS, TS...)? White Tamiya spray primer first? Fola at Slotfabrik recommended RoMa or Zero Diamond top coats. Are these spray or brush on?

Where is the best set of "decals for dummies" instructions that I can follow?

"Where is the best set of "decals for dummies" instructions that I can follow?"

Well without patting myself on the chest...since I have wrapped the Scaleauto Porsche twice and got a set of "bespoke templates:...
...I guess I could guide you through the process...so....here?

Most of the "specialist tools' you need for doing a good decal job can be easily replaced by general household items.

The few things you might want to source from a hobby shop while you are waiting for you decals to arrive:
Some rolls of Tamiya masking tape, 2mm 6mm and 60mm
Some good quality brushes, sable hair brushes are the best but expensive, a good quality acrylic brushes will do the job as well.
A flask of Alclad waterclear gloss and semi gloss. Great stuff that is non aggressive and can be applied with a regular brush.
A Scalpel holder for blades #11 and #25....and the blades themselves.

to be continued?

with kind regards
Tamar
