Cox Dino Ferrari 1/24 -
chrisguyw - 11th-May-20
I built this one several years ago, and while some of the "senior" members may have seen it, perhaps some of the newer folks have not.
While far from the quickest car I have, it is certainly one of my favourites.
Cheers

How can it not be fast...?
Typical Quality Parts
- Flexible front end suspension for better cornering.
- Tapered axle – matched to wheel hubs – for perfect wheel alignment. Fits ALL cars.
- Hi-efficiency COX gear. Metal core, teeth of extremely tough, low friction, exotic space age material.
- Chassis of diecast magnesium – half the weight of the usual aluminium.
- Finely detailed wheels of diecast magnesium.
- Accurately scaled racing tires with lots of dig.
Superflex lead wires (not shown) supplied with both X100 and X200 COX Motors.

Oh dear, I've come over all 'vintage'!

Lol Jeremy
Chris will remember me calling his builds 'simple' . Not sure he took as the compliment as I intended it to be. But this is one of those cars that typify his brilliance.
No painted doorlines, one colour body, no painted detail parts, no painted underbody, simple outstanding paintjob, with brilliance, fantastic driver and superbly clean chassis and wheels. - Just brilliant!!! ANd thaose clear headlights and screen....... for me mindboggling (I have hands that shake when I do detail work so for me that look is impossible).
The true genius of this - is that it is NOT simple to do - takes more work and craftsmanship than I can begin to imagine.

Hi Jeremy, Fast is relative.......the Dino has had a few bits and pieces reworked/trued etc., (the motor itself has had the gimballed bushing replaced/soldered, magnets zapped/shimmed, new comm./arm shaft, a mild rewind/dynamic balance, and all new hardware,...so it is a very quick slot car, and much quicker than todays' plastic cars, but, when compared to some of its competitors of the era (Dynamic, Russkit, Champion, Riggen etc),....it is not that quick !!
Stay Safe

Hi Chris
The formatting of the original Cox 1965 advert got a bit lost in my message.
However I'm now interested in your comment that slot cars have got slower over time! So much for progress, presumably it's cost driven progress...

Hi Jeremy,...again all relative........over time, 1/24 and 1/32 commercial track type cars, have become much much faster and handle waaayyy better than the the majority of the Vintage commercial track type cars shown here, so, tons of progress (if it is to be called that) has taken place.
While I rarely race "wing" cars any more, that type of slot car, can lap a 155ft 5 turn "King" track (no magnets) in 1.5 seconds !!
The motors used in these cars run roughly $400 US each, and need a $50/60 rebuild every 30/40 mins of run time.
So,.....slot cars (general term) have become much faster,.....however, the type of cars that most now race, have been designed for a different environment/consumer ........shorter/tighter home and club tracks packaged home race sets, and in an effort to appeal to a good deal of consumers, and to hopefully encourage repeat purchases. costs have to be kept in check (motors that cost pennies etc.).............just imagine what the Cox Ferrari Dino would cost today.........1 piece cast magnesium wheels (specific for each Cox model), a cast magnesium chassis, tapered axles with threaded knockoffs etc. etc.
So todays' plastic cars are great,..they look good, are plenty quick for the motors they use and the tracks they run on, are cheap, and the average guy can take one out of the box and have some fun, and not have to be an engineer to fix/modify them......but, they are far from the quickest things in the box.
Additionally, and very important, is the size of the hobby today., and its effect on production costs.........Cox sold in excess of 1 million Dino kits alone , Classic sold over 2 million Manta Rays,...........today most new releases are produced in the 1500 unit range.
Cheers

PS a pic. of a 1/32 commercial track "open" f1 car...........150+K motor, with massive torque = $400.
They don't look great,....you certainly can't drive them around and have fun with your buddies, and they need a lot of maintenance/$$,.....but, they are fast !!

What an animal.
Just trying to comprehend how different that motor must be to the ones I play with.
Looks like the pinion disintegrated in the process.
