Strombecker McLaren M1B -
chrisguyw - 2nd-May-20
Strombecker made some of the nicest molds, and the McLaren M1B, was one of their nicest, and very much to scale,....it is a tiny little bugger !!
Anyway, it has been sitting in my workroom for eons, and with the forced hometime we are all enduring, I have decided to make it my next build.
Trying to make this..............this one is not mine, unfortunately mine is a little worse for wear..........
Into something like this................so a few bits to be made/added.
I started with the chassis, as I find these the easy part of the job..........a simple single rail chassis with .047 main rails, set for 2mm+ clearance with 19+ mm tyres.
This will be powered by a stock Scaley FF050 motor and will be legal for our early USRRC/CanAm class, although as short and narrow as it is, it will struggle.
I have started the bodywork........removed all bits, opened the vents, (as they should be , they were closed in the original), and added a front diaplane, and a rear spoiler.
Still a lot of clean up to do...........
The car is tiny,....I think I mentioned that,.....luckily the shortest wheelbase setting on my jig was perfect !!
Still miles to go, but, I will post updates......

I like what I see.
Are you going to cut the cockpit out?

Watching with real interest Chris!!
You say the chassis builing is the easiest for you - for me it is the toughest. When you build another one - I would love a photographic 'how to' - would help immensely!
Thanks for posting

I am not sure John,......with the car lowered to an appropriate ride height, there is precious little room between the top of the motor and the cockpit bottom as is, so , I am not sure what it will gain, it is so tiny, that I would have to go with a sidewinder 030 to gain anything in the interior, and the 030 will not cut it in our club's class for these cars.

How wide (narrow?) is it Chris? For the Lotus 23 project, I found that a sidewinder 050 would not work but a 15 degree angle winder just makes it

Hi Al, I am away from home at the moment, so I can't get any width measurements for you, but, I will in a day or two.
As well, as the 1:1 car was built in 1966 (at least 2 years before the first anglewinder was thought to be built) I am not going to employ that configuration,.........silly I know

Hi Chris:
You stated that you will be using .047 main rails for the build. Would this give you more torsional flex than using .055?

Hi Garway, ....Yes !!, the .047 rails will result in a bit more torsional flex.........considering I will be using an 050 motor (low torque) , and relatively skinny ties, a softer flexing chassis will perform better.

I finished the rolling chassis today, and considering how short/narrow it is it ran very well,....for what it is, it is likely one of my better performing recent builds.
Now for some bodywork !!
