Chassis height for digital ( LC led ) - turbo d - 16th-Apr-20

Hi have been playing with some Scalextric BTCC cars during lockdown, but have found after a number of laps the lens of the digital chip starts to wear and so the changes start to get intermittent . the height under the chassis behind the led is about 1.3mm but the led hangs down lower , is there an optimum chassis height to stop the led wearing ?

There are better people on here who may be able to give you a clear indication, but the height will be a function of how flat your track is. Standard Scalextric cars don't have suspension, so the LED must be catching on a raised part of the track, a joint perhaps...

If you manually push it round the track, maybe you will hear or feel where it is touching.

Turbo..
There is no simple answer to your question.
The track, wheels, club rules,  tyres, magnet (or not) all play a part

I would suggest that no matter how high your chassis rides, having the led riding below that height is never a good idea,
Any damage to the emitter LED will impact your lane change

Must be a type H chip....

These run of chips seem to have the LED protuding from the DPR hatch a lot more Cussing than the previous G version...

And are prone to being scratched if your running a low car...

Suggest...trim off the melted mounting points from the front of chip with a scalpel, swann morton no3 with no11 blade(my favourite)...

This allows the chip to move upwards a little and recess the led...I then cut a little rigid foam to insert under the front of chip to support it....

You can buff up the scuffed led with either burnishing cream or a bit of T cut..use a cotton wool bud..as they say buff on buff off!

I will try and post a pic later

Although this would make Mr Miyagi very happy there is an easier way to "resurface" the IR led's surface.

A good clean and  a simple drop of clear acrylic paint over your IR led will restore the surface to a perfect shine.

Hope this helps

you could be crass like me, and put somthing in-front of the LED so it hits not the led.  A Scrap of plastic perhaps even a bit of hot melt glue BUT DO NOT GET IT ON THE LED.
