"Hello John, got a new motor?"
Just catching up with stuff after my little (UK) holiday. Most of the chat seemed to revolve around some sort of slot car ringing scheme organised by Big Greg (think Noel Coward in The Italian Job, but with a beard...)
So BG had put the orders out to the team. Leo managed to pick up a couple of Porsches off the streets of Edinburgh and quickly got them out of the country and over to Honest John in Canada. He'll be doing the actual cutting and shutting once he gets his head round what's in the box. After that is done, things got a bit confusing. I think Greg was going to use all his talent to paint and decal the body, Chris was going to use all his talent to paint the driver (Jackie Ickx' younger brother, the one with the funny eyes) and then it was going to be shipped over to Den the Fence on the West Coast who was going to flog it at one of his car boot sales. Will follow this with interest.
To cover for all these goings on, Dennis came up with a story about a slot shop in California opening it's doors to hundreds of people for a grand re-opening after their Covid shutdown. Alan updated us all on the progress with his Touring Car heading down under for this year's Australian Proxy Championship. And Brian showed off some Spykers he got for a steal (not off Den the Fence I hope) and talked through some of his tuning methods and received further tips from the brains of the organisation, Chris.
And to finish off, Dennis showed us his SRC Toyota that he had built up from a white kit, but he was not happy...someone had nicked the hubcaps! Now where did Leo go...?

A Mid-Summer's Night Dream
CGW got us off to a strong start with a walk & talk through his Porsche 997 Proxy chassis. Shiny tyres, smooth lead, minimalist detailing, but is it all show and no go? Not according to Chris, he thinks it's a goodun...which probably means it's a
real goodun! Anyway all that talk was lost in one stroke by Wayne's admission, he watches slot car proxy race videos in the shower. He was looking forward to spotting Chris's Trans-Am entry in about 3 showers time, but he probably won't see much from Denis on those. He is taking a breather from Proxies seeing how they have become more of a 'tuners' game than a scratch builders. Perhaps the appearance of 3DP proxies will get Dennis back on the pitch.
The Chat then welcomed Travis to the stage. Close neighbour to Big Den (well, about 3500+ miles), he was pushing an open door in this company with his YouTube channel of slot car unboxing (John take note) and 'showing and telling' about the products. Petruchi was on hand with a few tips and offered to help him out if he gets stuck trying to source new products for his shows.
Travis's unboxing of a SRC Motor Magnet Measuring Thingy led us neatly into the middle 'dream' section of the Chat.
I say that being someone who struggles with a lot of things electronic. I was wide awake for Alan's S-can/L-can adaptor S+T where he cut the filler piece he showed us last week in half (I think I need some of those). But then Alan showed us a relay he has bought for his SCP controller. I think I managed to pick up that he is unhappy with his controller as it doesn't have a wiper and works perfectly all the time. Now he wants to invalidate any Slot.it warranty and get it to make an annoying click all the time, or maybe I misheard him...
Courtney raised a topic that I didn't know I didn't know about, but now I do know about it and what I don't know now disturbs me. When building a proxy car, whilst it is pretty clear what type of track you are designing it for, what kind of driver/controller combination are you aiming at? Do you need to worry about the brakes on the car, or will the drivers dial in the correct amount on their controllers? Should he send a car that slides or one that chatters...which one will be most correctable by the proxy drivers? It turns out what he may need, or possibly not need, are brake pots on the drivers station to supplement the brake pot on the controllers. Everyone on the chat then took turns to try and describe how to best make brake pots on the track work with brake pots on controllers, all way beyond my electronic understanding envelope. Turn one up, and turn one down, or the other way round. Courtney looked on.
Dwaine brought everyone back into the room with some photos of some very nice cars he had bought off Dennis. No one was interested, they were all looking at the Revell track they were sitting on. No-one had seen any of that track for years, but we then learnt that is because Dwaine has bought up all the available stock on the planet.
The only thing nicer than nice track, is nice track with nice borders, and Brian showed off his minimalist black track borders on his home track and the catch fencing he will have to put up before he next runs his cars in opposing directions in each slot...which button on my SCP does that???

"A Chat of two halves"
So the Chat started with an update on progress with the cut & shut Porsche project. I have to say, all these reports are really going to spoil the surprise for Greg when he unwraps his 'present' on the Christmas Special Zoon Chat. He really is going to have to practice his 'WOW!' face beforehand. He is also going to have to kerb his anger whenever anyone suggests that we all get a turn to run the car on our home tracks before it finals gets to him. You could see him screaming "NO!" into his microphone, but the auto-mute facility kept cutting in due to the excessive volume level.
Leo gave us some good advice on how to apply solid white decals onto coloured backgrounds, with his own cut & shut model as a good example. Chris chipped in with a recommendation for one of those North American cleaning product that help when applying sticky decals. The Europeans on the Chat all looked on mystified as to what they needed to buy.
Getting people to chat about their favouring car livery, real or fantasy, got everyone talking and showing off examples that some people drooled over, and some others could be heard tutting. That developed into a chat about real liveries on cars that never carried them, and fantasy liveries on fantasy cars, or 'thingies' as I now understand them to be called. Lloyd loves simple dark green, there were a couple of votes for blue and yellow, and Paul just likes anything that everyone else dislikes. We then all played a game of livery semaphore where we had to describe a night out on the town using only the liveries of your favourite cars. Looks like the Chat Christmas get together is going to be messy...Lots of Martinis (both straight and shaken up a bit) followed by some Buds and washed down with Jagermeisters, whilst having a JPS or Gold Leaf, and then a McD to finish off.
And then the En-Ger-Land Euro Semi-final kicked off against Denmark, and only Leo (Probable a Scottish supporter) and Paul (Definitely an Anyone who is Playing En-Ger-Land supporter) remained online from the UK.
What everyone who left missed, and the Chat probably only scratched the surface on, was a discussion on how to maintain the interest of newcomers into the hobby without blinding them with all the science involved in creating a competitive car out of the 'off the shelf' one they brought earlier that day and had with them in the hope of winning a race on their first outing. The follow up, related, question pushed the discussion further into "where is money most effectively spent on order for a beginner to become more competitive on the track?" So both pretty fundamental questions that touch on the future prosperity of this hobby. And some good answers offered that would assist a wider audience.
Anyway, Greg blew the final whistle at the end of full time, which meant that Leo and Paul still had to find something else to do for another hour before the football finished and life in En-Ger-Land got back to normal.
