re the decoders I'll check to see what Rev it is.
I haven't bought any for a long while since I started making my own, so it may not be the latest version.

Just had a look and surprisingly it's also Rev. G

That is puzzling - I wasn't aware of any firmware changes by Hornby during the rev G production lifetime. I wonder how it responds to analog? i.e. might it possibly have ICP? or could a hardware variation cause the difference you mention? Or perhaps I’m wrong and there were firmware changes?

It definitely goes into analog mode with dc.
I haven't changed anything on it i.e firmware.
It's a strange one :)

The next part of this project is to try a different approach to getting data on the rails and decode the data with a slot car. The SSD framework sees enough data to control ~6 cars sending the info to the rails about every 20 milliseconds. ( 50 times per second ) There is however another way to do it so we can send more than twice the data in the same timeframe and control more cars without sacrificing performance.

Writing software to encode the data on to the rails is fairly easy, but the decoder software part in the car takes far more effort. The decoder hardware needs a little higher spec than for stock SSD data as well. A stock SSD decoder should be able to do it with new firmware.

At present a custom car decoder is working really nicely with crisp throttle and brake response, including reliable lane changing.
